Judd Apatow — seen above offering his stance on Jay Leno alongside Barbara Walters — is known for being ardently protective of the work of many comedians, not to mention of the comedians themselves. And when he hosted this week's Producers Guild Awards, he had two options: to come down either on the side of Ricky Gervais' much-ballyhooed performance at last week's Golden Globes or on the side of Gervais' roasted subjects.

And it's clear from his monologue which side he chose.

On Ricky:

What did you think of Ricky Gervais? I didn’t like him. I thought he was mean.

On the Jorge Garcia joke:

He had that joke about the guy on Lost. He said he ate everybody else. Let’s be honest — Ricky Gervais just lost weight. Even now he’s four pounds away from not being allowed to do a joke like that. Did he lose weight just to make fat jokes? You think that’s how mean he is?

On the Charlie Sheen joke:

Leno did it the week before. [In the comedy world, this is many-layered insult.] I think he’s an okay target. The people at CBS have said as long as he shows up on time, knows his lines, he can do whatever he wants.

On the The Tourist joke:

He says the characters were two-dimensional. Then he says he hasn’t seen The Tourist. So as a comedian, that’s not fair, is it? To make jokes about a movie you haven’t seen.

I can’t do a joke about The Invention of Lying because I haven’t seen it. You haven’t seen it. None of us have seen it. So the joke would not work.

On the Tim Allen joke:

He made a joke about Tim Allen who was standing next to Tom Hanks. Who looks good standing next to Tom Hanks? We all look like a piece of shit standing next to Tom Hanks. Warren Buffett would look like a piece of shit next to Tom Hanks.

Tim Allen did 200 episodes of Home Improvement. He was in three of the highest grossing movies of all time. And his latest just crossed the one billion mark. Whereas The Invention Of Lying made $18 million dollars worldwide. Leave Tim Allen alone.

If you couldn't tell, Apatow is a bit anti-Gervais, Golden Globes-wise. Whose side are you on here?

I was waiting for someone to say something against Ricky. Ricky's jokes were nowhere near as insulting as I would have thought.

Replace The Invention of Lying with Funny People and the joke works! Was that so hard Judd?

considering judd apatow's films start with promise and end up resembling a bad car crash, and ricky gervais is comic brilliance, i think apatow may be a tad bit envious. Apatow's comments are purile.

My thoughts: I dig me some Judd, but let's be honest... these are grown people. They don't need Judd to stand up for them and, yerp, that "Invention of Lying" joke was just bitchtastical.

I like Apatow, but doesn't "Tim Allen has an enormous amount of money" seem like a reason it IS okay to make fun of him?

Wow... This has to be the worst criticism I've seen of Gervais this far. Did Apatow even understand the jokes? Or is he just frustrated to see someone getting more comedic attention than him? Even Tim Allen didn't ask to be left alone and is one of Gervais' supporters.

I think Apatow was hardly being serious.
