And that's not the insult it sounds like! Also, there are a lot of visual vagina metaphors in this thing, especially in the beginning. Which means while this video is technically safe for work, I honestly think you'd be uncomfortable watching it in an office, unless you work at a gynecologist's. Let's just get to it, shall we? Here is the video for Lady Gaga's "Born This Way":

I know that was a lot to take in. The parts of my brain that process complex thought have mostly shut off, but here are my initial thoughts:

The Good:

  • Between the fractals and the butterflies, the opening monolog scene gave me a strong Alexander McQueen vibe. Nice to see Gaga's keeping that up.
  • I appreciate a pop star who is willing to really, really make herself look strange or even ugly, even if it's just in a video. Those prosthetics on her face and shoulders were freaking me out, but still.
  • I ADORE the odd little dance she does from 6:06 to 6:10. Please, internet, get me a GIF of that.
  • Unicorn.

The Bad:

  • For a song all about inclusiveness, it would be nice to see a bit more variation in the dancers/models. I love that there's a big hit that even uses the word "transgender," but maybe we could have an actual trans person in the video?
  • The opening monolog is too long and also, obviously, doesn't make a ton of sense.

Neither Here Nor There:

  • This really is a dramatization of Lady Gaga's vagina, isn't it?

Lady Gaga not afraid to get ugly? She's been a butherface since day one.

Ah, but she's the butterface who's not afraid to show it. Lots of popstars aren't that good-looking but use every trick in the book to hide it.

I so badly want to see what her and her crew could do with real big budget effects. Rock Opera anyone?

If it is I'm impressed...pop approval of self-vaginal love?

i feel like theres two videos here. like, the" safe dancing around mostly clothed" one, and the "crazy vagina exploding birth alien parable" one, and they sorta shoved them together. good, but not up to par

That video scared the poop out of me, but I think she's a great performer.

I appreciate what JBR is saying here. If nothing else, Lady Gaga proves that glamor is always achievable with enough makeup and lighting. In the end, it doesn't matter how "good-looking" you are, it's how "good-looking" you intend to be/can afford.

Couple of other thoughts:
a: Can someone tell me when it became law that pop videos have the "singer" in front of an army of dancers? With the subsection about group writhing?
2: Are you SURE there aren't any transgendered people in this?
III: Another view of this guy:

You're right, thinkywritey -- I'm not sure, and looking back on what I said I'd probably adjust my statements a bit. I guess my thought was that, for all the fake horns and make-up, the dancers seem pretty clearly "gendered." I guess I was hoping for something a bit more concrete and realistic; of course, that might seem both heavy-handed and tacky. It's a fine line.
