Watch: The new hardcore gangster rap from Tom Hanks' son, Chester
By David WarnerFebruary 4th, 2011, 7:06 pmComments (29)I don't know if you knew, but Tom Hanks' son, Chet, is a gangster. Disregard the fact that his dad is Tom Hanks, the fact that he is currently enrolled at Northwestern, and the fact that his name is Chester. He is hard. (Check his bling, yo.) The young Hanks boy, known as Chet Haze by his homies, raps about guns and money among other things in his "2010 Freestyle." My favorite lines are at the very beginning:
I'll stab with a ski pole
in the peep hole
Ay, Creepo,
I'm sharp like the space needle
I've never heard Creepo said so thuggishly. Chet's new mixtape, Get Hazed, drops on Valentine's Day. Look out for more tales about him and his "crew" doing what thugs do. This just makes me wonder: if Papa Hanks knew Forrest Gump and Cast Away would be paying for gangsta-rap studio time, would he have done them?

gangsta is as gangsta does
LMFAOO
I enjoyed that commercial for vasectomies.
You're. White.
jmh wins at life.
That guy is awful
actually, hes really not that bad, ive heard way worse. If its your passion keep it up
I'm embarrassed that I even watched this. What a joke.
doosh
Good voice... unfortunately poor lyrics... go figure. If he has all that money to work with, he should hire a writer...
Give it up. Give it up and go home. Now.
I liked it.
That beat could have been given to so much smarter of a rapper. The man needs better lyrics, that aren't subtly racist (which I'm sure he's unaware of).
Time for a throwdown! Chester Hanks versus Kevin Federlein's gangsta self! Two incompetent rappers enter, one leaves. Start voting....
He's hot. Too bad wangsta just isn't my type.
this guy ranks right up there with will smith's kid...'whip my hair' or whatever.
Celebrities, control your offspring please.
written.
Stop. Just....stop.
To late for an abortion?
"who said white kids from the suburbs can't rap?" No one ever said that, because its implied.
Actually he's pretty good and he obviously has a passion for the music. This is not gangster rap in fact his style harkens back to the original "bragging and boasting" roots of rap and I for one find it refreshing that he's not using any of the modern sung hooks, autotune or drugs and money crutches of modern rap.
He stinks...
Tight! Real! Bangin!
This really wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. He's not incredible but he's not as bad as people make it seem either. The most annoying thing is that his father's fame will buy him a lot more attention than his level of talent warrants, and than more talented people will get.
That rap was born out of black people with difficult lives doesn't necessarily mean that they own it exclusively. It would have been problematic if he'd claimed that he's had it hard and, in doing so, trivialized the struggles of the people who actually do, but he didnt. Authenticity is a sliding scale - yes, he's white and rich, but he admits that. And a lot of the black "gangster" rappers out are no less cushioned and bourgeois than he is.
All that said, the "beat down like Rodney King" line was questionable. And I'm with Lanko, there's no way that was a freestyle.
@Limbo, I think this qualifies as gangster rap for the predominantly violent images if nothing else.
nothin like a nice written posed as a freestyle.
he's really not bad. good delivery. the guy just is tryin too hard to play a role.
Yeah, this is clearly pre-written, but his flow is pretty good, and the beat is kind of cool.
In other words: to all you ridiculously upper-class white people deriding the video, go back to Toro y Moi, if this kid has passion then let him do what he wants, he's really not bad.
(Full disclosure: I am white and upper-middle-class).
(Also, in the interest of more full disclosure, I am neither a DJ, a rapper, nor Chairman Mao)
Truly, the kids enjoying it. Is life not to enjoy what you enjoy?
