Despite the generally insane lead-up to this year's presidential election, there's been a shocking — and, frankly, boring — lack of off-the-wall political ads. Herman Cain had a couple, featuring uncomfortable close-ups of his highway-drifter campaign manager and some goldfish-snuff clips, but a race this grueling and vicious and polarized shouldn't have to rely on one man for all the craziness. Ron Paul, why are you not bringing your libertarian conspiracy theories to our screens? Gingrich, how have you not made an ad about Romney driving a minivan with his dog strapped on top, except the dog is the American people and the car is RomneyCare or same-sex marriage or a secret robot identity? I'm just spitballing here.

Thank God, then, that Rick Santorum decided to get in the game. His new ad imagines a world where the American people reelect Obama, and lets you know that if that happens, you'll basically be living in Silent Hill. And that'll be on you:

Is this the America you want? Filled with crows and children's shoes and blue filters? An America where people dress babies in red onesies and men stare at you from vans and we all watch news on three TVs at once? An America that is basically hell on earth, because you thought it would be "cool" or "hip" to vote for Obama again? Rick Santorum didn't think so.

I think Romney has it right (for once): Santorum is now running for 2016, and for that to work, he has to do what he can to ensure Romney loses to Obama. That's why Santorum's saying that there's no difference between Romney and Obama. Perversely, he's sort of right, once you eliminate Romney's pandering to the right wing. Given their druthers, I think both men would basically be Eisenhower Republicans, which is why both men are so infuriating to their respective bases.

Did anyone else notice the hyper-fast flash of Obama's face on the TV at around 40 s.? You know, shuffled in with images of Ahmadinejad and the voice over "America's enemy?" Is this really endorsed by Santorum? Seems too over-the-top stupid for a direct link to the candidate.

American style politics are weird.
You couldn't show ads like that here cause you'd get laughed out of office.
