Fox may not renew Glenn Beck's contract

Glenn Beck's contract with Fox News expires in December, and according to the New York Times, the network may not renew it. As we noted in February, Beck's ratings are down 39% from last year, and apparently there's been considerable in-fighting at Fox over the pundit's controversial statements. According to the Times' David Carr, many Fox insiders fear that Beck's conspiracy theories "have made it difficult for Fox to hang onto its credibility as a news network." (Here I am fighting the urge to make a rude remark.)

Carr also notes that around 300 advertisers have left the show, not wanting to be associated with a guy who called Barack Obama a "racist" with "a deep-seated hatred of white people" and claimed that Al Gore was creating a "Hitler youth." This mass exodus, Carr says, has left "sponsorship to a slew of gold bullion marketers." Nothing pairs better with level-headed reporting than gold-bullion ads! Carr's whole article is worth reading, but before we all get too excited about Beck's maybe-impending demise, we should remember that Glenn Beck is a much smaller problem than the millions of people inclined to listen to someone like Glenn Beck, who will probably get a whole new Glenn Beck by this time next year.

I bet he'll come back. Beck is still (I think) their highest rated show. Unless there are enough advertisers to make Fox lose money, he'll be back.

Beck's not their highest rated show-- he frequently is 2nd or 3rd among the fox line-up, and often loses in his own timeslot to other cable networks...

Same

"to other cable networks" not other cable news networks.

meh

Not like the NYTs is a cheerleader for Fox or anywhere close to balanced in their reporting regarding Fox.

meh indeed

Not like Fox is balanced in reporting anything. It is laughable to even call Faux News...."news".

It is laughable. Just because Fox includes all political viewpoints is not an indication in its interest in being "fair and balanced." I prefer CNN and MSNBC, networks who make no attempt at being fair. Can't we all just agree that because we disagree with some Fox News personalities that we can trash the entire network? Anyone who thinks that Fox is fair and balanced is worse than Hitler, even if Fox is, well, fair and balanced.

Beck has lost over 300 advertisers this year alone. No matterhow high his ratings are, the bottom line is that Beck is not a money maker for Fox anymore.

Isn't he going blind? That's gotta be a drawback.

He's a huge moneymaker. This is misinformation. Take it to the bank.

Not What Ching

Better "the devil we know". If someone replaces Mr Beck, they will get more attention than they might deserve simply due to the novelty factor.

Yes, snappy, I agree: When I disagree with someone, I want them silenced! What good is the First Amendment anyway? It was written more than 100 years ago and is very inconvenient to my desire to hate and disparage!

Beck is just one of the crazy talkers out there; Charlie Sheen is another.
