Jerry Seinfeld's stand-up on Late Show: "What's the deal with cell phones?"
By Carlos CabreraNovember 17th, 2011, 1:15 pmComments (13)Ah yes, Jerry Seinfeld. One of the gold-plated names of the comedy world. Thanks to his incredible wealth and success, he's got carte blanche to do whatever he wants — make a movie centered around bee puns? Did it. Take over for Regis Philbin? Done. Produce a terrible reality game show? Way ahead of you.
That same wealth has also made him something of a bitter old crank. After broadcasting his hatred for Lady Gaga after she used his box seats at a Mets game, he's starting to sound more and more out of touch. This was especially evident in the recent set he did on The Late Show.
Jerry opened his set with a long diatribe about phones, referring to our society's obsession with "that hard rectangle" and the warm feeling you get from being able to scroll over and pass judgment on people "like a gay French king." This all segues into a couple jokes about caller ID and star-69 that I can only imagine were written fifteen years ago, got lost, and turned up last week. Finally, this legend, this benchmark of comedians closes with jokes about erectile-dysfunction commercials — a bit that would have sounded dated in 1998.
And that's the problem. It seems that all comedians eventually get to a point where they don't have to really try being funny anymore. Once you're paid well enough, your presence alone garners you a modicum of laughter. Jokes that would get an unknown booed offstage magically turn into passable material. Now, I wouldn't go as far as to call his jokes terrible, but they're certainly tired. Even though he hung up most of his material back in 2002 to start over, the new stuff can't help but sound incredibly similar.

I think it's funny in a self-aware kind of way.
I thought it was funny, it was very Seinfeld humour, albeit a little more risque than what they would allow him on TV.
seriously carlos, way to take it personal. he did a bit, it's' his bit and he'll keep doing it as long as people think it's funny, which they do. myself i'm not crazy about him but i can see the appeal. to his credit, seinfeld has enough money to live for a billion years and he's still out there working instead of calling it a day. how about you do your thing and let him do his... oh wait, you don't have a thing, that's why you're here badmouthing people that are just doing there job. have fun with that.
there is something to be said for integrity of craft, part of which is growth and innovation.
unwatchable
So was this entertainment news or a review of Seinfeld's act? Because one is not the other.
Next you're going to complain that Don Rickels is still trying to get laughs by calling people "hockey pucks."
why do you give a shit that jerry seinfeld gave a less than par performance on a talk show?! what a waste of time.
This is life, get used to it.
I'd say this was right up there with the usual standard of American TV, so why bust his chops, and not everything else on a par with it? Let the average-to-mediocre do its thing in peace.
I thought it was funny!
If you're going to bad-mouth a comedian, write a story about Larry Cable Guy and leave Jerry alone. You're wrong. He's still funny.
you pussyfinger, do something worthwhile with your time! like writing an interesting article. try it! i'll bet it's rewarding. unlike this drivel.
