Cher and Christina Aguilera's film "Burlesque" gets its first trailer
By James Brady RyanAugust 5th, 2010, 3:15 pmComments (6)Burlesque — the much hyped project starring Cher, Christina Aguilera, Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci, Cam Gigandet, and Alan Cumming — released its very first trailer today. The movie's plot follows this pretty rote formula: small-town girl with grit/talent/boobs moves to LA/NYC/Vegas to sing/dance/act, struggles to prove herself, probably gets into some sketchy sexual situations, and eventually makes good/gets crazy with a switchblade. Tale as old as time.
That being said, this movie had the potential to be either a really amazing bit of cult fluff, or a really embarrassing venture for everyone involved. Audience included. Well, we finally have our chance to make some initial judgements:
Hm. Okay, here's the thing. Kristen Bell, playing the (presumably evil, given her brown hair) established star, seems believably hot yet experienced at thirty. Christina Aguilera, playing the young ingenue upstart, seems...also thirty. Because she is. Don't get me wrong, home girl's still got it going on, and it's not like thirty means you're used-up in any way, but I just can't buy her anymore as a young girl dying to escape her small town life and hit the big city. (Thirty!)
What do you think, readers? To be honest, I'm getting the feeling of a potential guilty pleasure that just won't live up to its promise. Am I wrong?

If the video store still exists in twenty years, this title will be on its "Cult" shelf.
I hope this isn't as terrible as it looks.
I think you hit the nail on the head there, James.
It looks like Showgirls comes to Los Angeles.
I can't wait to miss it!!!
If (as they say) 60 is the new 40, then Ms. Sarkisian (64 as I write this) might well steal the show from her younger counterparts. Or is 30 the new 20 as well?
