Polish photographer Piotr Zastrozny recently shot an elaborate series called "Nine Months," which documents a friend's pregnancy. Zastrozny then took these photos and created a mesmerizing and delightful time-lapse video. A classic 1940s trailer for his movie would feature text wipes urging you to: WITNESS! A study in anatomy like you've never seen before! BEHOLD! As the miracle of life unfolds before your very eyes! and TUNE IN NEXT WEEK! To see unicorns having furious gay sex! — Jason Wishnow

What was your inspiration for "Nine Months"?
I've been friends with Tom and Iza for years. When she became pregnant, I asked straight away about doing this project. At the beginning Iza wasn't sure. It took her a few moments to consider, and then she agreed. It's the best souvenir someone could ever imagine.

How did she handle the shoot?
Women are a lot stronger than men, and I don't mean physical strength here. I started taking pictures during her second month. When it came to her comfort level, there weren't any problems the first few months. Later on, there were some days when she didn't feel like posing, but that's completely natural.

In the photo series, you show your subject's face. Why did you cut it out in the video?
When you look at a picture, you have enough time to calmly go through all the details contained in that image. When you watch a movie, everything happens so quickly. Iza is a very beautiful girl, and I didn't want someone to be distracted by her face. The primary focal point is the transformation in her posture. There is a different way to focus on the same frame, whether in motion or a still picture.

You seem to pay homage to Eadweard Muybridge.
I like Muybridge. I like who he was, what he did, and why he did it. To be honest, I can't say why I also like 150 other
photographers, musicans, or people. When I like something I try to enjoy it without over-analyzing.

Where else is this work being shown?
This movie will be a part of my diploma (Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk in Poland). It will be shown with my other pictures taken in the small villages of Eastern Poland, where unemployment is dominant. The communities are inhabited by more or less twenty people, the oldest of whom is almost seventy years old.

Where can we see more of your work?
My homepage.
