What Should I do With the Wall?

Posted by Wendy Atterberry

About six months ago I moved from Chicago to New York to close the gap in a long-distance relationship. I closed it so much, actually, that I now live with my boyfriend. Two weeks ago, I sent for my things that were still sitting in storage in Illinois and little by little, Drew and I have been figuring out how to best incorporate my things with his things as well as the best way to mesh our individual design aesthetics. Of course, the 700 square foot apartment couldn't hold all our stuff, so we've unloaded quite a bit on Craigslist (incidently, is anyone interested in a coffee table? How about a dinette set?), but now that we've got room to move, we're focusing on the decorating. Which brings me to my question for you. See that picture above? It's from our livingroom (that's Miles the cat, by the way. He's a real sweetheart). Now, imagine it tidier (please!), with different pillows (I'm still picking them out) and a chic black lampshade on that lamp over to the left (it's on back order). That still leaves the enormous empty wall that I — we — need help figuring out how to decorate. Drew wants to hang lots of photos and artwork there, which I'm not opposed to, but I think it could be time-consuming and pretty expensive, both of which I am opposed to. I, on the other hand, am thinking of a wall decal, wallpaper, or perhaps one large picture. So, what do you guys think?

I told steph recently about something I saw on TV that might work for you.... I kinda wanna do it myself.  You take a totally awesome picture of flowers and blow it up like poster size.  Then you cut the poster into 5 x 7 pieces and put them in their own individual frames with matting and such.  Then you arrange them all in the same way they were pre-cut.... does that make sense... and it looks pretty!

hat's a good idea, D La G. I think I'd do a variation of it. I'd find a black and white picture and I think I wouldn't necessarily cut all the pieces the same size. Or, if I did, I wouldn't cut them all the same direction. Definitely something to think about! Any other ideas out there?

Hi.

Stumbled onto your site and I thought I'd chip in -

I had these decals in my old apartment and loved it. It adds color to the room without being glaring and it was so easy to stick on and peel off.

Good luck with the room!

about the blogger

Wendy Atterberry is a recent transplant to New York City via Chicago. You can often find her at some karaoke dive bar singing her repertoire, which includes "Midnight Train to Georgia," "Daniel," and most recently, "Sweet Dreams." Don't expect her to always hit the right notes. She lives in Manhattan with her boyfriend and two cats, and has a blog like everyone else.

Alex Zalben is a writer living in New York City. He's written for McSweeney's, Modern Humorist and PulpSecret.com. As one-fifth of the sketch comedy group Elephant Larry, he has been written up in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and pretty much every other major publication. Their blog was named one of PC Magazine's Top Blogs for 2007, and they recently won an ECNY Award for their viral short, "Minesweeper: The Movie." Alex did not know love until he bought his first Mac.

Steph Auteri is a freelance just-about-everything, with a special fondness for home goods she can't afford. She has been published in Publishers Weekly, New York Press and Hooksexup. She runs the blog selfhelpme.net, and her work can be found at stephiswrite.com.
