Contest! Batacuda: Jewels On the Skin

Posted by Steph Auteri

[$19.95-$34.95, Brooklyn 5 & 10]

I'm lusting after this jewelry, partially because it's atypical, and partially because it reminds me of that upper-arm band I bought way back when because I figured it was the next best thing to a tattoo.

Batacuda is a line of jewelry from France, made from "eco-plastic" material designed to hug the skin. And, unlike that arm band from days of yore, it's actually elegant. Brooklyn 5 & 10 is selling a number of these pieces and, dude, I totally want the "Petals" necklace in purple. And gold. And every other available color.

After the jump, I model the two bracelets I'm raffling off to you guys. (Unfortunately, those photos look nothing like the one above.) All I ask of you is you'd rather get a piece of jewelry than an actual tattoo.

I'd rather have jewelry than a tattoo because jewelry comes off.  Doesn't match?  No problem, leave it at home that day.  Tattoos are just not quite as removable.

The jewelry is not going to change shape as I get old and saggy.

I would rather have jewelry than a tattoo because my body is a temple and no graffiti is allowed on the temple!  A little gilding wouldn't hurt though ;)

two benefits jewelry has over tats: first, i can still donate blood in the 12 months after getting jewelry.  second, the legal field is still very conservative, and tattoos are more likely to be frowned on than something removable.

my husband is jewish.  if i got a tattoo (i'd really like one), he would be offended; his grandfather was in nazi concentration camps, where they got those horrible number tattoos, and now all tattoos have that association to him.

plus, i'm an eco-friendly enthusiast, with a deep commitment to not purchasing anything that isn't sustainable or eco-friendly (killer... i want to go to target, but my commitment runs deep!)  i'm always looking for cool, earth-friendly products to try (and blog about), and i'd be excited to give these a shot.

(p.s.  i know you can kill my argument with godwin's law.  still.)

I am already covered in tattoos, so it is time to go 3-D! Plus, layers are all the rage... :)

I'm not getting a tattoo because A) I'm scared of needles and B) my husband has threatened to divorce me if I do.  While the second reason is nearly enough to overcome the first, I probably love my husband enough not to get a tattoo.

Wow, those bracelets are hot! I'd love a similar tattoo, but I'm totally afraid of the commitment! I mean, really, what I would have chosen last year for a tattoo, I probably wouldn't be so into this year.  What I would have chosen five years ago, definitely wouldn't be so hot right now. And if I had gotten a tattoo 10 years ago when I turned 18 - I'd be peeling of my flesh if it was still there today. (Sorry for the mental image!)

However, the bracelets, they are a commitment that I can make.  I'd wear them out to dinner. Don't like them by the time the appetizer comes, well, then, off they go! The world of fashion is ever-changing, and it's important to stay fresh - and boy, those bracelets are fresh!

Because I'm fickle!  When I was a teenager a friend of mine had parents who were bikers and were heavily tatooed.  They offered to buy her first tattoo for her 16th birthday but they had a family rule about the process and it went like this, you had to figure out what you wanted and where you wanted and all the precise details, then you had to put it in an evenlope in the back of your underwear drawer for a year.  A year later, if you wanted the exact same thing in the exact same place with no changes just as badly, could get it.  But if you wanted anything different, any small thing, back into the underwear drawer it went for another year.

Well me, I've never had any idea or concept that I haven't wanted to change after a year.  So permanent tatoos are not for me!  But the idea of magically transforming your skin and masking it, if only for a moment or an evening?  Ideal!

I have to cover tattoos at work - and I live in Florida, which has an estimated 3.75 days a year in which is it cold enough to wear sleeves. But, the bracelets look amazing and would be perfect for my 9 to 5!

Because there is nothing I love enough (well except maybe Paul.... ok and you) to have it permenantly inked on my body.  Things I might like now, oh like a princess crown or little heart would look extremely silly on a 40 year old.  This jewelry, however, would stand the test of time a little better.

O yes.. and OUCH!
