PSA: Why Haven't You Seen Wall-E Yet?

Posted by Alex Zalben

It's come to my attention that a lot of you didn't see Wall-E over the past weekend (or the weekend before, for that matter), and I have to say: what's wrong with you guys?

I know you'll think I'm hyperbolizing here, but you have a chance to see a classic American movie in the theaters, the way it's meant to be seen. It's just that good. Actually, it's better than that. Not only is it a good-hearted, funny film, but it pushes forward animation in a way no film has done since, perhaps, the introduction of CGI animated films.

Not convinced? Here's two videos, and an amazing story, that might change your mind:

Wall-E Spotted in LA! from Blink on Vimeo.

This first video is a self-moving Wall-E that's wandering around at Disney theme parks. How rad is that?

This second video is pretty spectacular. This lady saw the Wall-E teaser, and started crying, so she webcammed herself watching it two more times. The video got passed over to Pixar, so they:

1. Sent her a crew jacket.

2. Flew her and her boyfriend out to the wrap party. At the party, Andrew Stanton (director of the film) told everyone that when they released the trailer, they were unsure they were on the right track, and felt unsure about the film. Seeing her video gave them a second wind and kept them going. How awesome is that?

If you saw Wall-E, comment on this post, and tell everybody else why they should just go ahead and see it already, in case they don't just believe me.

I saw Wall-E with my husband during the day when the theater was almost full of little kids with their minders -- some kids as young as three years old. I thought, Oh shit, no, here we go -- Noise City. Yuck.

But as soon as the movie started, it got very quiet and during the ENTIRE FILM (and it's a quiet movie, relatively speaking) I could have heard the proverbial 'pin' drop. Not one of those hordes of little kids made a peep, they were so completely enchanted and absorbed in the movie.

I mean -- does that not say it all about Wall-E, pretty much?!

Ohhhh man.  Saw Wall-E last night and have to admit I almost cried about four times.  As a side note, this movie will make you want to start exercising, start recycling, and stop shopping at Wal-Mart.  Good notions to put into our children's heads, no?

I saw it this weekend, and I've had to force myself not to park myself in the theater seat and watch it successively for the whole weekend.  It was beautiful, sweet, so simple and yet so important and inspiring.  I can't wait to have it on DVD.  Those pixar guys have managed to make something that delivers a message we very much need to hear right now, while avoiding being preachy, and making something attainable for the smallest child.

about the blogger

Wendy Atterberry is a recent transplant to New York City via Chicago. You can often find her at some karaoke dive bar singing her repertoire, which includes "Midnight Train to Georgia," "Daniel," and most recently, "Sweet Dreams." Don't expect her to always hit the right notes. She lives in Manhattan with her boyfriend and two cats, and has a blog like everyone else.

Alex Zalben is a writer living in New York City. He's written for McSweeney's, Modern Humorist and PulpSecret.com. As one-fifth of the sketch comedy group Elephant Larry, he has been written up in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and pretty much every other major publication. Their blog was named one of PC Magazine's Top Blogs for 2007, and they recently won an ECNY Award for their viral short, "Minesweeper: The Movie." Alex did not know love until he bought his first Mac.

Steph Auteri is a freelance writer and proofreader who has been published in Publishers Weekly, New York Press, Playgirl, and other bastions of fine writing. She maintains a professional site https://www.stephiswrite.com, and also blogs about freelancing over at Freelancedom. You can keep up on her day-to-day by visiting her Twitter page.

Diana Vilibert is a freelance writer, among other things. Born in Lithuania, she now lives in New Jersey, where she doesn't have to walk to work ten miles in the snow, barefoot, uphill both ways. Diana cannot afford most of the products she writes about because she buys too many pairs of heels to make up for her shoeless childhood. She's written for MarieClaire.com, Janemag.com, and CosmoGIRL!.
