I'll Have the Sea Urchin Bukkake, Please

Posted by Emily Farris

So what exactly is sea urchin bukkakae? And where can you get some?

Unfortunately, or fortunately, it's not what you think. Apparently bukkake is a kind of cold udon. If you'd like to try it, head on over to Matsugen in New York.

Or, you can make it yourself:

Has anyone ever had bukkake?

Now, we don't know much about bukkake — the sea urchin kind, anyway — but one food writer we recently interviewed does think part of the sea urchin is the sexiet food. Click the picture to read Dating Advice (formerly known as Sex Advice) from Food Writers.

I don't know what this version of sea urchin bukkake is, but I did experience the other kind in college biology, where we did something or other to make sea urchins spew out semen (or eggs, depending on sex).  Nothing like masturbating an animal that resembles an inanimate object to make you feel creepy.

I think "bukkake" refers to the process of washing them with water as you cook them so they stay cold but still get cooked.  The word in Japanese originally meant "to splash", until its present connotation took over.

For my part, let's just say an older Japanese person teaching you how to bukkake your egg onto rice is a traumatic experience and leave it at that.

Bukkake is the noun form of the Japanese verb bukkakeru (打っかける, meaning "to splash forcefully." The compound verb can be decomposed into two verbs: butsu (ぶつ) and kakeru (掛ける). Butsu literally means to hit, but in this usage it appears to be an intensive prefix as in buttamageru (ぶったまげる, "completely astonished") or bucchigiri (ぶっちぎり, "overwhelming win"). Kakeru in this context means to shower or pour. The word bukkake is often used in Japanese to describe pouring out water (or other liquids) with sufficient momentum to cause splashing or spilling.[4] Indeed, bukkake is used in Japan to describe a type of dish where the toppings are poured on top of noodles, as in bukkake-udon and bukkake-soba.
