Gay Community Attacks McCain By Outing His Chief Of Staff

Posted by Brian Fairbanks

Is it wrong for the gay community to out a private citizen just because he works for a homphobic Presidential candidate?

Blogger Mike Rogers appeared on Michelangelo Signorile's radio show today to reveal that Mark Buse, Senator McCain's chief-of-staff, goes for the guys.

Why is this a big deal? Well, first and foremost, McCain's running with ardently anti-gay Sarah Palin, a woman who scares us more than killer drag queens from outer space.

We don't blame the gays for being angry about Buse and McCain, but is Buse fair game? He doesn't have a blog, doesn't talk about himself on TV, and pretty much stays in the shadows. So... should he have been outed or not?

(By the way, of course, we know very well that if Obama's chief-of-staff was caught having a gay orgy, the religious right would make sure everybody knew about it. But that's beside the point.)

Unfortunately, yeah, he's fair game. In private, no one should be outed. They should be allowed to live their lives as they see fit. But Buse is living in the public arena, working to dictate what form others lives may take. He's championing a ticket that wants to restrict equal rights to gay men and women. That makes his choice fair game. The public deserves to know the hypocrisy at play. McCain's Right Wing base, which he energized by adding a homophobe to the ticket, deserves to know that the candidate employs gay men and women.

It's similar to the incident where Noelle Bush was arrested for prescription fraud. Ordinarily, I would say that the candidate and his family should be allowed to handle this issue privately (like when Al Gore's son was arrested), but Gov. Jeb Bush backed strict penalties for drug possession and belittled legislation that sought to treat drug addiction as a disease instead of a crime. The hypocrisy of his rushing his daughter into treatment, when he worked to deny the citizens of Florida that choice made his argument for privacy empty.

The public deserves to know when a politician is full of shit. Buse outing does that.

This is so bad. Palin is NOT "ardently anti-gay".

That's a bold faces lie.

Her first veto was to ensure same sex partnerships get health benefits.  Excuse me? "ardently anti-gay"? I didn't think so.. Next.

Yes, Palin IS 'ardently anti-gay.'

Gov. Sarah Palin's church is promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer. "You'll be encouraged by the power of God's love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality," according to the insert in the bulletin of the Wasilla Bible Church, where Palin has worshipped for about six years... She opposes gay marriage and spousal rights for gay couples. Focus on the Family, a national Christian fundamentalist organization, is conducting the "Love Won Out" Conference in Anchorage, about 30 miles from Wasilla.

Whatever her first veto, as the Anchorage Daily News reported,

"Gov. Sarah Palin said Wednesday that she will comply with an Alaska Supreme Court order issued Tuesday to offer health and retiree benefits to same-sex partners of state employees starting Jan. 1.

"We believe that we have no more judicial options to pursue. So we may disagree with kind of the foundation there, the rationale behind the ruling, but our responsibility is to proceed forward with the law and abide by the constitution," Palin said.

But ultimately, she said, she supports denying those benefits through a constitutional amendment, if that's what the public wants."

Oh, yeah, I think so. Next.

She sought (unsuccessfully) to remove or censor certain books, including one titled "Daddy's Roommate", a book which explains homosexuality to children.

“Sarah said she didn’t need to read that stuff,” Ms. Chase said. “It was disturbing that someone would be willing to remove a book from the library and she didn’t even read it.”

FAIR GAME? Are you shitting me? This is not some stupid game, and the people whose lives you fuck around with are not just toys to be broken and forgotten. So NO, of COURSE it is not acceptable to out someone who works for a candidate or company of which you disapprove. Is he breaking the law? Is he doing something dishonest or cruel? If it were McCain himself, or one of his Lobbyist pals, I'd say it's deserved and go for it, but please, this is his office manager -- you're going after a scheduler, a glorified secretary. This is the definitive cheap shot, and no good can come of it. And it is, let me repeat, morally wrong and stupidly unkind. If you want to be better than assholes like McCain, this is not a good way to start.
