Sure, he was in a zillion Mel Brooks comedies, parading around as exactly the kind of fatuous twit that guys like Stephen Colbert are milking for laughs today. But more importantly: on The Carol Burnett Show, Harvey Korman perfected the on-screen crack-up. It helped having Tim Conway around to ad-lib furiously, throwing Korman and the other cast members slightly and gloriously off their game, but still: you know when Fallon and Thompson and all those other kids on SNL were laughing in the middle of their bits, they were thinking "Korman did it." True enough, though they might have added "well" to the end of that thought.
