This month’s Slice works a little differently: instead of a guest photoblogger, we have a guest photo editor. In American Suburb X, Doug Rickard is a “curator and critic on the contemporary photography scene as we know it,” wanting to provide “a sort of tour de force within the photographic landscape.”
Like Hooksexup as a whole, Rickard is committed to photographers who “carve new paths, not those who simply follow others. It has a sense of the historic context but stays firmly driven from within the current scene.” As long as the work’s original, nothing is excluded, as Rickard wants to “provide a kaleidoscope of aesthetics from within the photography as art community.”
But Rickard’s galleries won’t be static, as he will seek to “find words that can do justice to the photographs’ complexities and emotion.” His approach, in a nutshell, “is all about visual impact, complexity and quality of content, both visual and written.”
The outlook is good. Stay tuned as he features and comments on the work of Todd Hido, Michele Abeles, Jock Sturges, Tony Stamolis, David Maisel, Alison Sexton, Bertien van Manen and many others -- and occasionally talks to them as well.
