hey -- Rufus here. I agree with you, but think the argument Steven makes is not that video games are more beautiful or philosophically important or contain more wisdom about the human condition -- books are clearly a more effective format for these objectives. His point is that video games encourage some problem solving and mental challenges that books do not, and that a healthy media diet might include both books and video games, not to mention television and film. if your child does nothing but play video games, you should be concerned. if he or she does nothing but read books, that might also be limiting.

I play a lot of different genres of video games, but I still that books and literature provides some things that video games can't, simply because the character is being controlled to some degree and there is no constant narrative. It's like comparing a beautiful painting and paint-by-the-numbers in terms of depth. You can read some books and characters 100 times and come up with 100 different ways to understand them. I think the Final Fantasy series has the best stories and characters, but it can only achieve this through many constructed plot points and it still lacks the volume and detail needed for a book. Visually constructing a scene has its own kind of artistry, but it's not the same as verbally doing it.
