Mexican hotel cancels couple's wedding because they're gay
By Alex HeiglAugust 12th, 2011, 4:59 pmComments (84)Ah, the luxurious La Amada Hotel in Mexico. A five-star resort, it boasts "stylish hotel architecture and decor, generous suites, spotless service, and deluxe facilities." Unless, of course, you want to have an intimate marriage there, and you happen to be gay. Then, all it boasts is the damn door. Don't let it hit you in the ass on the way out, cabron.
A friend of Hooksexup wanted to have a small, forty-to-sixty person wedding at La Amada. He also happens to want to marry a man. He and his partner plan on getting married in New York in the spring, but also wanted to have an intimate "vacation wedding" in Mexico.
Then they received this email from La Amada:
"Dear [redacted], Thank you for your interests for La Amada Hotel. Being a family friendly resort, we unfortunately cannot support or perform a gay wedding. I understand you want to have a small intimate ceremony, but we cannot proceed."
So there you have it. Damn those cheeky gays wanting to get married in front of families! I guess the real question is how to shield millions of children the world over from the ugly reality of two people that love each other getting married.
Should you have any suggestions, La Amada Hotel's contact information page is here. Please let them you know you're chiming in with suggestions about how to stop the gays from getting married in front of families. Maybe a large wall — I hear Arizona's having some luck with that.

I wonder if La Amada Hotel has a restaurant called the Custerdome.
So much for the "Send 'em all to Mexico" campaign.
The Amada looks like a nice place. And it's family friendly, too!
only if you're the "right" kind of family, Travel Agent...
straight couple here that just canceled reservations at La Amada Hotel hotel for next month. with that kind of point of view of inequality, they should be really ashamed.
Great to hear! Thank you for going above and beyond.
Indeed. Well done!
Thank you!
Thank you for your support!
thanks for being awesome!
Well Done Calen , BTW, do you told them why ?
The first bad sign was that the hotel's house Wall of Voodoo cover band sings, "I'm a Mexican, whoa-oh, homophobe . . . ."
That is awesome Calen
What's more family friendly than a wedding? Not cool La Amada!
by law 2 dudes cannot get married in mexico
there is nothing illegal about a gathering of friends and family.
yes they can , in Mexico City
yes, thats is correct, but this was not in mexico city
That's not even close to being the point. They don't want a legal marriage in Mexico, just a nice, intimate ceremony with their friends and family in a beautiful place. The hotel can't deny someone the right to a private family gathering just because the law won't recognize the marriage that they plan to get later in New York, where it is legal.
Apparently the hotel can indeed deny them that "right."
Apparently, I only like Mexicans if they hate gays as much as I do.
Totally with you at-dudette. I think the Pray the Gay Away concept should be expanded. Like, it's much better being white than any other race (better job opportunities, higher pay, better looking) - maybe we can help some immigrants by praying the Mexican away.
Thanks Calen! Way to go!
Nice. Start, just BARELY START, to get just a little traction towards sanity in this country and you get c**k-punched with how much effing backwater there still is in this hemisphere. Done. Just done. I'm going to fire our nanny.
just booked a long weekend at La Amada. The hotel stands up for itself and won't be pushed around.
taking the kids!!
Until one day, when one of you children comes out to you...and you realize that this wasn't a case where an establishment was standing up for itself, but rather standing up against a group of people unjustly.
Yay! Discrimination! Whooohoo! Teach 'em while they're young!
Please teach the kids the basics of grammar. CAPITALIZATION IS IMPORTANT.
Also, please explain how La Amada - however ironically named - is being "pushed around."
Love the sinner and hate the sin.
I try to miss the point completely. Then I try to seek alternate meanings to what somebody said by twisting it to fit my anti-gay jesus bunny rabbit santa agenda.
I sat in the Bunny Jesus Santa's lap, and . . . and. . . . now . . . .
Since when is it anybody's business what people do with their genitalia? If one is of legal age and it is consensual, then butt out.(And while we're at it, why does the GOP always have to bring up gay marriage and anti-choice issues? When it comes to running the country what we need now are jobs, an affordable and fair health plan, an end to the wars we are involved in, and some good common sense.) This is discrimination at it's best.
I agree completely - we need jobs. When is the President going to get around to that anyway? He's only got a year to go!
I like to ignore that Republicans have created zero jobs. Obama is to blame for EVERYTHING.
Much lower unemployment under Bush. Were you not paying attention?
I like to ignore all of the reasons that the economy went into a downwards spiral. Namely, the 8 years Bush spent driving the country off a cliff. It's always Obama's fault for anything that goes wrong.
Don't worry - Obama will have everything fixed a year after taking office. He promised. And I believe. 9% unemployment is the new normal.
Some will blame Bush for everything and Obama for nothing.
I like to watch FOX "News", where the word "some" or "some people say" is a great way to make up sources to fit hyper conservative fake stories. "Some people say Bush was the greatest president ever? We make you decide!"
I just sent the La Amada a message telling them how I am going to recommend their hotel to every gay family I know. They're family friendly right, apparently they forgot that gays can also have families.
I bet they're very concerned!! You sure showed them! Perhaps dozens of "families" will go there and be disappointed.
I don't even try to hide my bigotry.
Or that you're a troll.
I like to troll my own bigotry.
Love how you complain about discrimination against yourself and then rant about putting up a wall to shield yourself from these pesky mexicans. Gays too can be (and often are like everybody else) damn hypocrites. You cannot shield in your gayness to get away with everything.
'shield in your gayness'? Dude. I'm not saying that sounding like an idiot means you are one, but your ideas are, to say the least, unclear. You sound a little. . . . hmm. Frothy? Or maybe just like a 2nd grader. You're against gays. That's cool. A lot of people were, back in the pleistocene.
There are no greater hypocrites than the open-minded left. You've hit the nail on the head.
My favorite game is to blame other people else for what I'm guilty of.
gay marriage IS legal in mexico. it can only be performed in mexico city, however it is recognized in all the other states. this hotel must dislike external revenue.
La Amada will justly rewarded~ cuz Karma IS a bitch. As for all these narrow and ignorant haters...Karma's MY bitch, and she knows where you lurk. Many Smiles
Or it likes its family-oriented revenue.
Ok, I'll admit it. As always, the loudest homophobes are usually self-loathing gays. I'd like to take this opportunity to let everyone on Hooksexup know that I am no longer a closeted homosexual.
I emailed them and let them know that it's not their responsibility or right to judge whether it's 'right' or 'wrong.' Their job is to provide customer service to their guests without discrimination. What a horrible business and ethical move on their part.
Agreed! Well put!
Family friendly is not the real reason. This hotel is owned by the excellence group. Next door is adults only Excellence Playa Mujeres which also doesn't allow gay marriages.
Their motto: "Hate the gay, not the Playa."
I left this message on their contact page:
I think its great that you're not allowing a loving gay couple to have a wedding in your hotel. Here are other things, also from Leviticus, that I believe you should take a stand against:
* People who eat shellfish
* People who wear clothes made out of more than one material
* People who shave or have ever cut their hair
* Anyone who has eaten beef that had previously grazed with other cattle.
* Anyone who had eaten a plant that had been farmed on farm with other plants
I wouldn't want you to look like hypocrites, so please, if you're going to follow the laws of Leviticus, I expect you to follow them all.
Perhaps adherents to Judaism are bound by this. Christians, of course, are no longer bound by the Law.
Yes, Christians are no longer bound by the Law, but they sure do bring Leviticus up quite a bit when they think it is needed.
I am enlightened: I get to choose which fairy tales to base my existence upon.
Of course, but until I stop seeing ridiculous signs like "God hates fags", I'm not sure the majority realizes it.
"I guess the real question is how to shield millions of children the world over from the ugly reality of two people that love each other getting married. "
Actually, the real question is how to shield millions of children the world over from the ugly reality of bigotry. So called family friendly hotels (and theme parks, such as Dollywood - though Dolly is trying to correct this) isn't the answer.
What a load of crap.
...coming out of my mouth.
It's not legal morons.
Don't google me.
Sick of all the PC sheep out there !
For me, PC sheep = non-bigots.
Oh, by the way.... Free enterprise. They can do business with who they want. Gays, smokers, nudists, or whatever. Who are any of you to say otherwise ?
I like to base my morality upon business models. Who are any of you icky people to say otherwise?
Listen, I think some dudes are just trying to earn some God-cred. I mean, if you realized you're having premarital sex and that it's bad in the big book of Jesus, I'd try get in His Good Book by making an honest man of myself.
Similar question: if sex with a woman is better than with a man, is raping a woman better than raping a man (since it's not gay)?
Suggested message to Mexicans wanting to get into the USA: "We want to reduce the amount of drugs in our country. Sorry, you cannot proceed."
Suggested message to self: "We want to reduce the amount of racism in our country. Sorry, you need an education."
you're stupid. As if the US was a mecca for gay people everywhere. I live in one of the biggest cities in the US and I still see gay people being mistreated. And you're complaining about drugs in the US? Maybe there wouldn't be such a big supply if there wasn't such a big demand for drugs. It's not like Mexicans are pushing drugs into this country, this country is asking for more. Go read a book
I live in this area of Quintana Roo Mexico and there are a lot of Gay Friendly Hotel I think this is a rare case
Shame for then, I donĀ“t have any interest to go to that place.
I understand the difficult decision that LaAmada made. This is the only family resort of this small chain. The other 3 are adult only which I imagine would have no problem with the ceremony. I have seen many gay couples at their resorts having a great time. I do not understand why they would not go to one of adult resorts? I do understand that gay people have families. I have gay members in my immediate family. But we must realize the majority of the world are hetrosexuals and many have strong religious beliefs. We also have to give these people's views just as much consideration as we should for those who are gay. It is a two way street. It is very unforturnate that this unforseen problem came about. I do not think it is anyones fault. It is advertised as a family resort. In hindsight it would be wise for the couple to check this to avoid any problem. I imagine they will check the next resort they consider. It is quite likely this is not the only resort in the area who may say the same. This should be a time of joy and love. I hope this couple can move forward and not dwell on dissapointments in the past.
Wow -- a mature person posting a comment on Hooksexup. I do believe this is a first.
To sum things up, I believe that bigotry and discrimination are justified by tolerating the warped morals of people who believe in fairytales and folklore as fact. Jesse, I'm glad you're a bigot too. It's the hallmark of the "mature".
Jesse,
I am sorry for the reply you see above. That was not my post. I am not trying to offend anyone. Much prefer peace from both sides.
Well, not trying to offend anyone...except the gays! They shouldn't try to book anything at a family resort.
I posted about this on the hotel's facebook page and they deleted it and blocked me. Guess they're not proud of the decision?
Private venue. It has the right to refuse service to anyone. I don't hate gays but I also don't hate business who refuse to service anyone for any reason they deem affects their image/business.
I don't like the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
What liberating knowledge. Give me liebrty or give me death.
Now you say something
