Karen O talks about her new "psycho opera"

Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O's latest project is a "psycho opera" that will be premiering in Brooklyn in October. The singer announced her plans for the event last month, but has now revealed some key details about the project.

The opera is a part of Vice and Intel's multimedia Creators Project, which will debut at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, NY, from October 12-22. O's musical director will be her bandmate Nick Zinner, and Sam Spiegel (director Spike Jonze's brother) will be on hand as well. The opera will feature performances by members of the Greenhornes and Raconteurs, as well as Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer Brian Chase and actress Lili Taylor. Designer Christian Joy will be in charge of wardrobe, and novelist, screenwriter, and playwright Adam Rapp is producing.

In her words:

"It should feel like a psychedelic ride laced with catharsis. There is emotional cost to our narrative so we're aiming to engage the audience, this piece isn't aiming to be all about spectacle or abstraction, though there is a good helping of both in the production. It's aiming to have all the good stuff of escapist entertainment with a few sucker punches to the gut along the way."

Hmm. Possibly excellent multimedia experience or probably awful faux avant-nonsense? O generally doesn't do things by half measures, as anyone who's seen live footage of her can attest. Whatever goes on in that warehouse, it'll be interesting at the very least.

There's a touching aria in the first act sung by Leathery Racist Man.
