James Cameron Goes To Washington To Fix The Spill

james cameron

If any of these BP spill solutions sound like the fever dreams of a mad filmmaker, just wait. James Cameron went down to Washington D.C. yesterday to meet with scientists and officials to propose new solutions to manage the spilll, as Cameron is "an ocean-technology buff and has been an expert in underwater filming and manned submersible vehicles since his pioneering work on The Abyss in the 1980s." Cool, and discouraging. No doubt Cameron has considerable underwater experience from Titanic. And I'm sure James Cameron raised his hand to come help like the most excited kid in class. But outside of all the very bizarre-sounding solutions, bringing in James Cameron to fix the leak isn't going to help the public feel any better about this. (Though, if he devises a strategy for stopping the spill with a combination of CGI and Na'vi people, we'll be impressed.)

Maybe scientology can come up with a fix. I mean really, they've done it for other "stuff". Riiiiiiight

Well even if he comes up with a solution it's going to be ridiculously over budget, and he'll probably end up nearly bankrupting a bunch of government departments, and he'll just be like "fuck you guys I'm gonna finish my movie, er, cleaning up this oil spill." And then it'll come out in IMAX 3D and tickets will be $20 but it'll be totally awesome.

Next up: Katherine Bigelow heads to Washington to show hot-shot Cameron how it's really done. Cue media blitz over "Oil Spill Battle of the Exes."

Na'vi people actually would be quite helpful in this situation.

What you are forgetting to mention is that Cameron, either himself or from his ideas and initial designs, invented quite a bit of underwater technology in order to shoot Abyss which is now in everyday use by professionals around the world. Not to mention the tech he invented to shoot Avatar and the fact he is a paid consultant to NASA, who is credited with providing significant solutions their own scientist and engineers didn't think of.

Using the word "Buff" to describe his contributions to underwater technology is really UNDER-estimating his abilities. He's clearly proven himself to be way smarter than anyone running BP, and if NASA thinks he's good enough to consult, then I'm not going to complain.
