Man facing 10 year prison sentence for downloading Simpsons porn

Former middle school teacher, Steve Kutzner, 33, of  Meridian, Idaho, has pleaded guilty to downloading more than seventy pornographic cartoon images on his computer, many of them depicting child characters from The Simpsons. Kutzner immediately resigned and entered a guilty plea, after a search warrant led to the discovery of the images. Kutzner is scheduled to be sentenced in January of 2011. He faces ten years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

As Comic Book Guy might say, Worst. Guilty Plea. Ever (probably thinking of his own undiscovered X-rated Mary Worth images).

If all of the images were just cartoons (and not actual child porn), don't we have better things that we could be doing with our tax dollars instead of keeping guys like this in prison (which will cost us what, something like $30,000 per year?).

There was actually a 2008 ruling by an Australian court that declared Simpsons porn counted as child pornography. I understand that there is a big difference between actual living, breathing children being exploited, and cartoon images, but the intent might be the same. Could be a slippery slope. I wonder how low someone with cartoon porn is ranked in the prison hierarchy. And I hope Disco Stu isn't hung like John Holmes, the injustice of that would really piss me off.

bearman33 commented on Oct 18 10 at 12:39 am

He's not exactly getting 10 years for Simpsons porn. The FBI got their warrant because the guy was sharing images of real actual kids being exploited. He managed to wipe those images, but admitted to the FBI that they had been there. The cartoon porn charge is a lesser charge to get him for the actual kiddy porn that he admitted to.

so we just gave cartoon characters rights? The ACME corporation is going to have one of hell of a lawsuit coming their way for pain and suffering caused by anvils.

explainerguy commented on Oct 18 10 at 10:21 am

The Simpsons have been on for 23 years. Just because they haven't physically aged doesn't mean Maggie's not legal and should be out of college already.

DR commented on Oct 18 10 at 11:54 am

I was a child cartoon character. There is nothing funny about being drawn into sexual exploitation.

Merkin Man commented on Oct 18 10 at 11:55 am

Cartoon characters have had rights since George Bush was elected. (I'm going with Bush the younger here.) In fact, you're going to see many more cartoon characters right up to the 2012 elections.

The US Supreme Court already ruled in 2002 that simulated depictions of child pornography (which would presumably include cartoons) cannot be prosecuted as actual child pornography.

So if my mate draws some cartoon pornography and puts it in my bag I could get 10 years in jail if I am caught with it? I'd better tell people I know to stop drawing a cock and balls on things.

Dan commented on Oct 18 10 at 1:25 pm

@Dan: as long as your mate draws adult cock and balls, you should be OK. even in Australia.

ThisAgain? commented on Oct 18 10 at 2:15 pm

Real child abuse, photographed or not, is totally repugnant and illegal in almost(!) every jurisdiction.

Animation and CGI have advanced so far and will continue to do so in the future that I predict that there will come a time when it will become impossible to distinguish between real and synthetic pornographic images.

The courts and the public will have to decide whether the creation of synthetic, but disgusting, images encourage or abet the harm to real children.

As a libertarian my concern for children leaves me, reluctantly, on the side of prohibition. Kids MUST be protected.

I'm a Dad.

Interesting thought Firstmate. Sirrix - bp clarified it in an earlier post. The former teacher had been sharing images of real children, but then erased them. The animated porn charge is kind of a stand-in for the real child porn that was being disseminated. I think most people would take that deal all day every day.

bearman33 commented on Oct 18 10 at 7:22 pm

Wait, wasn't Marge in both Maxim AND Playboy? And didn't they show Bart's "doodle" in the movie? Does that mean anyone who owns the Simpson's movie had child porn in their home?

CupOJoe commented on Oct 18 10 at 7:55 pm

I remember years ago when I was just looking for regular porn there was always some random site with cartoon characters getting rammed. A lot of them were Disney characters or Lisa and her dad, which is gross on so many levels. I just don't really get it.

Brooke commented on Oct 18 10 at 9:51 pm

Who doesn't have massive quantities of Simpsons porn on their computer?!? We could all be at risk.

I cannot believe the number of people here who believe that it is acceptable to imprison someone for possessing erotic pictures of BART AND LISA SIMPSON.

Peter Voth commented on Oct 19 10 at 1:51 am

This is ridiculous. Child pornography laws were put into place to protect children from sexual exploitation. Understandably, the guy had kiddy porn that he deleted and probably deserved the sentence, but there is a huge difference between a drawing of a cartoon character, and being in possession of pictures of a child who has been sexually abused. Who is the victim here? The paper that the cartoon was drawn on? This is a thought crime.

Doh!

Homer commented on Oct 19 10 at 2:10 am

If a child was not harmed in the production of it, then it's not child abuse material, and shouldn't be treated as such.

Whatever a person whacks off to is their business, no matter how disgusting you or I may find it. But so long as no actual child was harmed, it should not matter.

The law is an ass.

Harold commented on Oct 19 10 at 2:14 am

What's more dangerous: a bunch of cartoons or a bunch of people who throw rationality to the wind in the name of "protecting the children omg"???

Jesse commented on Oct 19 10 at 2:44 am

Since the evidence presented in court was that of cartoon characters and not real persons, then the guy has no business being in jail.

olujonathan commented on Oct 19 10 at 3:41 am

It's just another reason to put people into the military-industrial complex, which the prison system is with private para-military trained guards. Soon we'll all be either in FEMA camps or prison. You've been warned! Now Prepare! The fall of the United States Empire is eminent!

Thought Criminal commented on Oct 19 10 at 10:42 am

Ludicrous! What is the fine line between watching online and actually downloading something from the web. Depending the software the site uses it could be downloading a video that stores on the hard disc and the watcher, if he's not savvy, is not even aware that it stays in his computer. Does that make him a criminal? And a cartoon, for chrissake!!!

Goolagong commented on Oct 19 10 at 11:11 am

I've seen pop-up ads for cartoon porn, and I was tempted to download them because they are hilarious. You can Google cartoon porn and get a hundred sites. And yes, there are children, dogs, gnomes and aliens doing the nasty. Child porn is bad, but no one downloading Lisa giving head to Bart is jerking off to that.

I think you underestimate the strangeness of people in general.

Rule 34 commented on Oct 19 10 at 1:06 pm

Since the guy had cartoon porn pictures, his punishment should be to have cartoon drawings of him in jail posted all over town.

Finrod commented on Oct 19 10 at 1:44 pm

@ThoughtCrime: "imminent" not "eminent." If you are going to rant, at least get the key word right. Unless you were using the wrong word ironically, in which case it was brilliant.

What about the latest south park episode where the kids are raped by that jersey shore slut?

wtf commented on Oct 19 10 at 3:55 pm

This is absurd. What if I draw a picture of Wobelkins having sex? What's a Wobelkin, you ask? A make-believe creature I just invented in my mind that looks like a 12-year-old human child but is actually over 1000 years old. The only way to tell them apart from human children is their foot horns and double-set of eye-teeth, that they use to eat humans. Typically a feast on humans ends with an orgy, which is why I had to draw it. Now you know.
