According to this New York Times article, many elderly gays and lesbians are discriminated against and mistreated in nursing homes and by home care workers because of their sexual orientation. Gays and lesbians often go back into the closet when entering nursing care because it's easier than dealing with the prejudice of healthcare workers and other patients. Nursing homes specifically for gays and lesbians have been cropping up, because going in the closet greatly increases the likelihood of depression and loneliness in elderly lesbians and gays. Oh man. We need a teddy bear and a glass of warm milk. This is just too sad. (Thanks to Ann for the link)
