This Woman Is Addicted to Love...Or Maybe Just Needs a Hobby

Posted by Nicole Pasulka

Can you be addicted to love? When did that stop being shitty self esteem and become a diagnosible disorder. According to this article, Clare Catford plowed through manpanions looking for the perfect guy, all the while binging, purging, crying and generally being obsessed with being in love. Clare explains:

"My rock bottom with love addiction came about three years ago, after a relationship with Sam, a married man I'd met over the internet, had ended.

I found myself lying on the kitchen floor in the foetal position with a bottle of painkillers at my side.

Addict or no, Clare Catford's life sounds pretty fucking unhappy. Read this article and feel better about getting a little codependent with your ex boyfriend.

If love addiction is a recognized condition now, does this mean that they've defined what love is? Oh good! A few thousand years of poets, philosophers, artists, and pretty much everybody else are looking for the answer to that one.

"I was in with cocaine and heroin addicts and I realized our addictions were fundamentally the same."

Um...well, just "um" because I'm at a loss. To me, the fact that we feel the need to validate our own personal brands of dysfunction by slapping on clinical labels to make them "real" speaks volumes about our attitudes towards emotional and psychological problems. Why isn't it enough to be a person with severe depression and anxiety problems with a history of bulimia and a sexually repressed childhood who's symptoms are catalyzed by problems with men? Now that needs a name? Give me a break. And trying to talk about a concept as abstract and elusive as love in clinical terms just seems ridiculous to me.
