Dare to Dream, Girls: High School Offers Pole Dance Demo

Posted by Colleen Kane

A high school in Paignton, England offered a lesson in pole dancing during a recent lunch break as part of Be Healthy Week. The demo was given by 32-year-old instructor Sam Remmer from the pole-dancing company The Art of Dance, in a public area of the school.

Students in the crowd made videos with their cell phones, and presumably something like the teen craze "sexting" ensued. As did staff complaints. The second demo was moved inside to the gym.

Remmer gave these lessons for free on the condition she could post her own videos online, and that's where this situation gets even more problematic. The school asked her to take down her videos, and she took down the videos that showed students, but not others in the gym, and defends herself thusly:

"Mrs Remmer said unless people are educated in the differences between modern fitness pole dancing and lap dancing then negative stereotypes will not go away," reports the Sun. "She said pole dancing is appropriate for young teenagers at school as it is a mix of dance moves and gymnastics and is excellent for fitness."

And, for some, it teaches a profitable, if short-term, career skill!

I bet if they incorporated 'fitness pole dancing' into the high school cheerleading routines the attendance at games would skyrocket.
