Scanner regularly shares with you the pain we feel about loving embarrassing things in a series called “I Hate Myself for Loving You.” But sometimes, the inverse is true. Sometimes hating something that is universally beloved can be incredibly gratifying. Today, Bryan Christian initiates our new series with a piece on Blade Runner, recently released for its 25th anniversary. We should add that, as part of the Hooksexup Film Issue, a story will soon come out possibly claiming the opposite of what Bryan is arguing here. What can we tell you? He is grumpy.
OK, true story: We were at a party this weekend, and when we mentioned that we didn't like Blade Runner, a 34-year-old man turned seriously away, hunched silently at the window for a moment, then demanded to know which versions of the film we had seen, and, still unsatisfied, walked out of the apartment.
Well, good riddance chump! We caught a screening of Blade Runner: The Final Cut recently, and you know what? It's just as plodding as we remember.
