Those scattered naysayers who would diss the trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s Australia will no doubt claim that it makes the film look like little more than a garden-variety Oscar-style epic. But then, Luhrmann has never exactly reinvented the wheel, narratively-speaking. His game is to infuse old-fashioned stories with eye-popping visual panache in a way that shakes off the mothballs of nostalgia to make them feel contemporary. Based on this trailer, it looks like he does so again here. Of course, it’s hard to get a good look at the no doubt awe-inspiring visuals, given the frantic pace with which trailers are cut nowadays, but I’ve seen enough to know that I want to see more. And frankly, isn’t that what trailers are all about?
