Our own Scott Von Doviak's recent post about Hollywood celebrities doing pandering commercials in Japan sent me scrambling to YouTube to find a thematically equivalent entry for our Video of the Day, only with my own delightfully distinctive retro twist. Of course, movie stars doing cheap commercial endorsements is nothing new; it's been happening since at least 1895, when the star of Louis Lumièr's classic Le Jardinier et le petit espiègle did a spot for Tussaud's Nev-R-Clog Hoses. So it's not as if we were particularly shocked to see Hollywood's greatest Sherlock Holmes, the ever-elegant Basil Rathbone, doing a commercial for a crummy Midwestern light beer brewery.
