The May 12 earthquake in China's Sichuan Province, with a death toll estimated at well over 60,000 people and with more than 20,000 still missing, is clearly one of those events that will leave few of the victims' countrymen unscarred. Zhang Ziyi, the star of House of Flying Daggers and Purple Butterfly, reported blowing up last week at Cannes when, in the course of her charitable work on behalf of earthquake relief, she encountered a a group of people who professed ignorance about the disaster. According to the actress, "I was as angry as a madwoman. I said, 'Are you idiots? You are well-dressed people who look like you identify with society, but you don't know what's going on on planet Earth.' It's incredible!" (Zhang herself has doned $144,000 to relief efforts.) Now Jackie Chan has announced plans of his own to raise money by making a movie about the earthquake.
