A surprising new, two-disc DVD set from Disney, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, gives animation buffs and cultural historians a chance to see what Disney animation was like before it was Disney. In the beginning, it was, in fact, Iwerks--Ub Iwerks, who formed a partnership with the Disney brothers, Walt and Roy, after he and Walt had been commercial art students together back in Kansas City. They worked together on the "Alice comedies", which blended live action with animation, and then Iwerks developed the character of Oswald, who first appeared in the 1927 short Trolly Troubles.
