Ann Hornaday measures the differing approaches to factual accuracy in recent movies claiming to be "based on a true story", an old-fashioned turn of phrase that has of late been retrofitted to read "inspired by true events", or even, in the case of I'm Not There, "Inspired by the music & many lives of Bob Dylan." Historical inaccuracy in historical movies is nothing new--Cecil D. DeMille told a few stretchers in his time--and it's not always reprehensible.
