Judith Stein is the executive director of the Center for Medicare Advocacy, and has worked as a health care advocacy attorney for thirty years. We asked her to comment on Michael Moore's Sicko, to tie in with its recent release on DVD.
This is not a movie review. I'm lawyer, not a film critic. Since 1977, I've been representing Medicare beneficiaries who can't get fair access to their health insurance coverage. Mostly my clients are over seventy-five, and many have very significant disabilities. They can't get the health care they need. And, like Michael Moore says in Sicko, my clients are among the lucky who have insurance. Their problem is that the insurance they have won't pay for the care they need.
