At the recent TV Critics Association Press Tour panel on Friday Night Lights, executive producer Jason Katims had a lot to say about the upcoming season (which will air exclusively on DirecTV starting in October, then on NBC in February). As reported by Entertainment Weekly and New Jersey Star-Ledger critic Alan Sepinwall, he provided spoilers galore.
Don't click if you don't want to know what they are!
-- Wild-guy Tim and newly religious teen queen Lyla will get into a serious relationship. "They're like an odd couple, from different sides of the tracks," Katims says. "They have different ideas of the future. They have different ideas of personal hygiene."
-- Nice-guy quarterback Matt and rebellious coach's daughter Julie will become "friends again," then maybe more.
-- Landry will have a hard time accepting that Tyra only wants to be friends, especially after she meets Riggins' rodeo-star buddy.
-- "Mrs. Coach" Tami Taylor will become principal of the school. Which is fine with the Coach, until he realizes that she's now his boss.
-- The show will introduce some new characters, including J.D. McCoy, a freshman quarterback phenom who's pressured to succeed by his father. (Of course, who doesn't have father issues on FNL?)
-- Although injured ex-player Jason Street and hotshot team star Smash Williams both will be relegated to occasional appearances next season, Katims says that "we're going to do everything we can" to bring back Smash's sensible mother, played by the fantastic Liz Mikel.
-- No murders!
