We are shocked and dismayed by the news that Mia Kirshner's character Jenny Schecter will be killed off in the January 18th premiere of The L Word's sixth and final season. Your humble correspondent has watched every single episode of The L Word ever -- surprising that a show about women and pretty much only women could have found such a fan in your average straight male, right? Why is that exactly?
Perhaps it's the complexity of the characters, or the inspiring plight of their community's fight against discrimination.
Perhaps it's the intricate plot twists, as friends become lovers, lovers become enemies, and everyone searches for recognition in a heterocentric, homophobic world.
Who can say. Whatever it is, we sympathize with their struggle, and tune in each and every week -- often even rewatching episodes On Demand, with the ability to pause and rewind, so we are sure we didn't miss any particularly trenchant dialogue. The news that Jenny Schecter will be murdered hits hard - although the fact that Mia Kirshner will continue to play Jenny throughout the season, through the magic of flashbacks, is comforting. We always thought her nuanced portrayal of arrogant, egocentric, quite often topless Jenny was acting to savor - over and over and over again.
