"Prison Break": Is Fox Finally Ready To Consider It "Prison Broken"?

Posted by Bryan Christian

Is it safe to say we've all had the same, tortured relationship with Prison Break? The first season was kind of cool, in a run-and-gun kind of way. It was ludicrous, yeah, but because we were mostly locked into Fox River Penitentiary with Lincoln and Michael and the boys, we'd kind of let some of the more outrageous stuff slide, because prison is an extreme place, and it's got rules that maybe we don't know about, and anyways we'd seen Oz, so give 'em a little space to do their own thing, right? All in all, pretty captivating stuff. And for those of you with a nose for that sort of thing: yes, the boys were also captivatingly pretty.

And yet, after that first season, what? More prisons, more breaking, a head in a box that wasn't, a re-attached hand that was as convincing as Buster Bluth's hook, and yet another reiteration of a menacing, multinational corporation called "The Company"? Really? That's all ya got? "The Company"? Oh, is that where all "The Bad Guys" work? We were sort of hoping that subplot would go away at some point, but no, the action moved to Panama and somehow "The Company" managed to become even more central to giving the Burrows boys endless headaches. Snore.

Well, tonight's the season four finale -- and as yet, Fox has not ordered a full fifth season. In fact, they've ordered six more eps and a 2-hour movie for airing some time in 2009 which, one can expect, will wrap things up movie-style rather than drawing things out over another year.

So what can you expect from tonight's ep? Well, the Burrows boys find out their mother is still alive, judging from the promos, which, huh? Also someone leaves the show. Sucre left earlier this month, apparently, deciding to just give up on the whole endeavor, making The Company pay or whatever, and just live his life. Which, hang on -- that's an option? Did he mention that to everyone else on the show? It's something we figured out for ourselves long ago.

Lindy Parker has worked as a ghostwriter, editor, dance instructor and a purveyor of dreams, one beer at a time. She loves Charles Dickens and Gabriel Garcia Marquez and also, straight-to-video releases with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. It's possible she reads more teen fiction than she should. She hails from Los Angeles, her hometown and soul mate, but she lives in Brooklyn, the fling she'll never forget.

Olivia Purnell left Ohio for sunny Los Angeles; then found that she couldn’t ignore New York City’s call, and brought herself to Brooklyn where she has worked with GenArt, BlackBook, the School of American Ballet, and finished an M.A. in Creative Writing from N.Y.U. She loves one-liners with sting and hates the stench of the subway in the summer. That said, she can’t get enough of either.
