REMINDER: Joss Whedon Swears Things Are About To Get Interesting On "Dollhouse" [SPOILER]

Posted by Olivia Purnell

We've been waiting.  Now, Joss says, the show is really about to start . . .

We're 5 episodes into the first season of Joss Whedon's latest brainchild, and so far, we've been less than uber-impressed.  It's not that we don't enjoy Dollhouse.  We thoroughly enjoy Eliza Dushku.  And we love the occasional girlfight.  But as we've said before, there simply aren't enough aren't enough Eliza-kicks-ass moments and the prostitution/human trafficing thing is disturbing.   What's more, the brainwashing element that is central to the show's premise makes it hard for us to relate to Eliza.  Which is what we look for in a Whedon series.  We need a witty pint sized fighter to root for from our couch while contemplating taking Judo classes at our local Y.  Instead, Eliza's character Echo just makes us feel vaguely sad and hungry for the comfort of hostess treats.

We're not alone.  Other Whedonites are a little cranky about the general lack of Whedonesque witticisms and snappy dialouge (as Echo in her brainwashed state isn't exactly a bag of laughs).  Apparently Joss doesn't really care if that's what we're buying 'cause it's not what he's selling this time around.  He tells TVguide:

"[Dollhouse] is not the light-hearted romp that the other shows were," Whedon tells TVGuide.com. "There are moments of funny, but it doesn't build like — nor was it designed to be — a comedy. It's not going to play that instrument."

"If there is a typical Whedon show," he adds, "this is not it."

Sad.  On the bright side, tvsquad.com reports that Joss calls this Friday's episode "a game-changer."  Here's what's going down:

Alan Tudyk, known as the character of "Wash" from Firefly and Serenity, will be appearing on Friday's episode. Most likely he'll be playing Alpha, although that's not completely certain at this stage. However, given the character's penchant for knives and the fact that Tudyk is holding a knife, it's a fair bet. .

We're hoping this new edition (from an old school Whedon fave) will breathe some life back into the show.  Specifically into Dushku.  We need her sass.  Maybe Alpha can give us a little bit of that.

Lindy Parker has worked as a ghostwriter, editor, dance instructor and a purveyor of dreams, one beer at a time. She loves Charles Dickens and Gabriel Garcia Marquez and also, straight-to-video releases with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. It's possible she reads more teen fiction than she should. She hails from Los Angeles, her hometown and soul mate, but she lives in Brooklyn, the fling she'll never forget.

Olivia Purnell left Ohio for sunny Los Angeles; then found that she couldn’t ignore New York City’s call, and brought herself to Brooklyn where she has worked with GenArt, BlackBook, the School of American Ballet, and finished an M.A. in Creative Writing from N.Y.U. She loves one-liners with sting and hates the stench of the subway in the summer. That said, she can’t get enough of either.
