"Jon & Kate Plus 8" Returning for Season Five

Posted by Chenda Ngak

For a show that's all about family, we're a little disheartened by all of the salacious infidelity gossip -- and totally confused about the pending announcement of a fifth season.

It was reported by gossip blogs earlier this month that Jon was staying with his mother's house for a while and that the marriage was on the rocks. To make matters worse, he was spotted partying and kissing girls from Juniata College. Then, the season four finale was a mixed bag of awkward subtext and fake smiles. During their final interview Jon expressed his difficulty coping with the fame that came with the show. When asked about returning for a fifth season, Jon said "Maybe we'll be back, maybe we won't." He continues with what seemed like unlikely excuses for such an easy-going guy.

"It's hard being on this side of the camera... and trying to live your life, and people see your life as episodes, and you see it as a date on the calendar."

"It's tough. I can't be 'Jon.' I have to be 'Jon & Kate Plus 8,' which is a real hard thing for me and I still haven't come to grips with it."

There is speculation that part of the problem is the shift in the male-female role in their relationship.

Jon, once the family breadwinner, lost his job and is now a stay-at-home dad. "He comes from a traditional Korean family where the husband is the breadwinner," says a friend. "That's part of the problem."

Kate, who originally shunned publicity, is now pulling in big bucks as a star speaker on the lecture circuit.

When asked by producers whether or not they would return for a fifth season, Jon said "Maybe we'll be back, maybe we won't." Of course, the Yin to his Yang, Kate, said that she was happy doing the show and wanted to come back. They left with the interview being open-ended, saying that they're working on it.

But all the publicity has done wonders for TLC's most popular series.

Monday's "Jon & Kate" season finale snared a series record 4.6 million viewers, and TLC is expected to announce a fifth season for "Jon & Kate" next week.

"In order for the show to work, they both have to be happy," says one insider. "I would imagine that, if there is a next season, Jon's issues will be addressed."

Listen, Jon, OctoMom would push out a hundred babies just to have a fraction of your success, so suck it up!

Lindy Parker has worked as a ghostwriter, editor, dance instructor and a purveyor of dreams, one beer at a time. She loves Charles Dickens and Gabriel Garcia Marquez and also, straight-to-video releases with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. It's possible she reads more teen fiction than she should. She hails from Los Angeles, her hometown and soul mate, but she lives in Brooklyn, the fling she'll never forget.

Olivia Purnell left Ohio for sunny Los Angeles; then found that she couldn’t ignore New York City’s call, and brought herself to Brooklyn where she has worked with GenArt, BlackBook, the School of American Ballet, and finished an M.A. in Creative Writing from N.Y.U. She loves one-liners with sting and hates the stench of the subway in the summer. That said, she can’t get enough of either.
