The unemployment rate is over 8%. The Dow is around 6,500, a 12-year low. Businesses are shutting down right and left. The country's in 2 wars. Health care is a mess. Politicians and talking heads from both sides keep bickering over how to fix all this. It's a depressing time to be the Nightly News anchor. Or, for that matter, a Nightly News viewer. Brian Williams noticed he kept hearing from viewers how depressing they found the news, so on Wednesday he asked them to nominate people who, despite it all falling apart around them, do random or regular acts of kindness. He got thousands of e-mails, and will start telling these uplifting stories tonight.
That's nice. But it occurs to us that the problem could not be with the message, but rather the messenger. What if, instead of inserting good news into broadcasts to cheer us up, we just reported the same depressing news, but replaced the gravitas of Brian Williams with the insane comedy stylings of Charlotte weatherman Mark Mathis?
