Five Albums You Should Be Listening To Right Now

This week's curator: Kerry Black of Superfly Productions.

Every two weeks, titans of the mediasphere give Hooksexup their music recommendations. This week: Kerry Black, of Superfly Productions. Superfly co-created the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival; Bonnaroo 2010 starts tomorrow, June 10.

Harlem, Hippies

Harlem and their album Hippies

My favorite shower sing-a-long album of the moment (especially the track "Be Your Baby"). '60s throwback style with great songwriting. They seem to be having a lot of fun, which results in songs that sound happy even when the subject matter isn't, as evidenced by the rousing opening line of "Friendly Ghost": "I live in a graveyard!"

Portugal. The Man, The Satanic Satanist

Portugal. The Man and their album, The Satanic Satanists

A 2009 record that won't go away. I feel compelled to mention it because the band and this album still haven't gotten the recognition they deserve. A perfect summer-day album.

Band of Skulls, Baby Darling Doll Face Honey

Band of Skulls and their album, Baby Darling Doll Face Honey

A possible heir to The Black Keys' blues-rock throne. (If only the Keys weren't at the top of their game with their amazing new record, Brothers.) Love the male/female vocal combo.

Brakes, Give Blood

Brakes and their album, Give Blood

This record is five years old, but has never left my regular rotation. An almost perfect record in my eyes, with great rock songs all over the place, beautiful ballads ("Fell in Love with A Girl"), covers ("Jackson"), and perhaps the best ten-second song ever recorded ("Cheney").

Gypsyphonic Disko, NOLA-PHONIC Vol. 1

Gypsyphonic Disko is Ben Ellman and DJ Quickie Mart with their album, NOLA-PHONIC Vol.1

"A mash of New Orleans bounce, klezmer, hip hop, and Balkan music." 'Nuff said? Fantastic party music.

Gypsyphonic Disko is brilliant! I never would have guessed it possible to mix "Milk Shake" into such an eclectic mix of styles.

Those guys in Portugal look like they know how to party.

Cool list, all the over map time-wise which I like. Band of Skulls is the only one I know but that Harlem track is infectious.

That new Harlem CD is really good. Also really good.
Nachtmystium - Addicts - Black Meddle Pt II.
It's like Joy Division meets Mayhem.

I agree with the Portugal, The Man choice. Ive been an avid fan from the beginning and have seen them live about four times. Each time is progressively better and Jonathan Gourley has awesome stage presence
