Every two weeks, titans of the mediasphere give Hooksexup their music recommendations. This week: Kerry Black, of Superfly Productions. Superfly co-created the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival; Bonnaroo 2010 starts tomorrow, June 10.
My favorite shower sing-a-long album of the moment (especially the track "Be Your Baby"). '60s throwback style with great songwriting. They seem to be having a lot of fun, which results in songs that sound happy even when the subject matter isn't, as evidenced by the rousing opening line of "Friendly Ghost": "I live in a graveyard!"
A 2009 record that won't go away. I feel compelled to mention it because the band and this album still haven't gotten the recognition they deserve. A perfect summer-day album.
A possible heir to The Black Keys' blues-rock throne. (If only the Keys weren't at the top of their game with their amazing new record, Brothers.) Love the male/female vocal combo.
This record is five years old, but has never left my regular rotation. An almost perfect record in my eyes, with great rock songs all over the place, beautiful ballads ("Fell in Love with A Girl"), covers ("Jackson"), and perhaps the best ten-second song ever recorded ("Cheney").
"A mash of New Orleans bounce, klezmer, hip hop, and Balkan music." 'Nuff said? Fantastic party music.
