Reader Feedback on "Beautiful Journey"
I often see Steve Perry power walking through my neighborhood. I have to hold myself back from telling him how I channeled him in my teenage bedroom, singing lustfully into my hairbrush, forever in love with the power ballad...because of him.

You're insane. Bands like Journey and REO Speedwagon have no staying power. They're lucky to get gigs at fairs and casinos. They were as bad to listen to back then as it is to listen to bands like Nickelback and Matchbox 20 today. Ordinary people listened to bands like Journey in the eighties like ordinary folks listen to top 40 crap today. Don't even try to make it cool because it never was and it never will be.

As a person who grew up here in the bay area with Journey I can only say that "yes" they were better than Styx and "hell yes" they were a million times better on the first three pre-perry albums. Gregg was a big part of Journey. It was his, and Neil's, band after leaving Santana. When he left... Journey left. That's when the band went down to the level of Styx

Ah the sweet memories... Thank you Lisa for the stroll back to the days of "Dash Slapping" drum beats in my '77 Mustang II. God do I miss the feelings one would get from listening to a Heaven sent band back in the day. Todays music, well, just doesn't send the same feelings. Oh my God! Does this mean we're getting "OLD"? Great write up!!! Personally, I Loved It.

Yeah, I love Journey too, not sure whether ironically or unironically, but honestly, couldn't the point be carried out without saying either ironic or unironic 1000 times in a very short essay?? She needs an arena full of editors to clue her in, or maybe just one very good one, ironically.

Ha! What that 22-year-old said. Hey, remember when Hooksexup used to be about sex?

I LOVED this essay. Never really listened to Journey, but damn if I'm not going to start.

Get over yourself. People sing Journey in karaoke bars because the band had a powerful sound and several catchy hits--simple as that. I hate to offend your elitist sensibilities, but the arena-rock songs you claim to have some sort of cultural monopoly on sound just as good for me, a 22-year-old, as they do for you.
