Catholic Church-owned publishing house accused of peddling smut

To borrow a simile from the 1999 Adam Sandler classic Big Daddy, when it comes to matters of sex, the Catholic Church and hypocrisy go together like lamb and tuna fish. Which is why it's not surprising that Weltbild, a German publishing house owned by the Catholic Church, has been accused of selling more than 2,500 books with pornographic content. The list of books, which was published by industry newsletter Buchletter, contains titles such as Call Me Slut!, Take Me Here, Take Me Now, and Sluts Boarding School, which New York Times book critic Michiko Kakutani referred to as "a nuanced, evocative meditation on youth and ephemeral passion" (actually, she didn't say that, but had she read Sluts Boarding School, I'm sure she would've penned a glowing endorsement of its contents). 

For its part, the company, which is Germany's largest bookseller after Amazon, says that the media's response to the books has prompted a "very intense and critical dialogue" about selling erotica, while the Catholic church attributes the snafu to "a filtering system failure" at the market. However, an editor at the Catholic magazine PUR alleges that church officials have knowingly sold spank bank material for over a decade, citing a document that shows the Church tried to sell the company in 2009 in response to complaints from a group of concerned Catholics. After they couldn't get anyone to buy Weltbild for their asking price, the Church simply stopped looking for a buyer. 

If this is the case, then the church has some pretty serious 'splaining to do, as their actions seem to sorta kinda maybe contradict the church's edict that "authorities should prevent the production and distribution of pornographic materials." The controversy raises a number of questions, like, for instance: what kind of fuckery is this? What kind of world do we live in that the unrepentant hypocrisy of rich and powerful religious bodies can continue unnoticed, for years and years? And where, pray tell, can I get a copy of Sluts Boarding School?
