Thank god. HBO needs its two strongest comedy series back - if only to distract us from our white-hot hatred of Entourage. Both shows return for their second series, September 26 at 10pm and 10:30pm respectively.
I'm not a huge fan of Jonathan Ames (or Phillip Roth 2.0 as I call him), but Ames found a happy medium in writing and executive producing for TV. Bored to Death takes the best of his Ames's humor and does us the favor of leaving out truly unlikable characters all based off himself, subsituting them for Ted Danson, Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifinakis. Excellent move.
Eastbound and Down is the real cult favorite that HBO dangled in front of us like a carrot for over a year after season one ended. "Season two will premiere in...February! March! June!" That went on every month in 2010 pretty much. But Danny McBride is back as Kenny Powers, the ex-baseball playing misanthrope with the best lines in TV. The acting, the writing, and of course the improvising, are top notch, made better by one of the best young directors in Hollywood, David Gordon Green.
