A quick’n’dirty cross between the worlds of D.O.A. and G.T.A., the original Crank was a major guilty pleasure of mine on its original release. Sure, it was an crazed gamer’s take on the action genre, but that’s what made it such a blast for those on its wavelength and, more surprisingly, for me, who’s never been into the whole video game thing. So while some might roll their eyes at the idea of a second crank (you know who you are) I’m actually pretty jazzed about it. The spirit of the enterprise begins with the premise of this second installment, in which Chev Chelios- the sort of name you rarely find outside Liberty City- actually survived the several-thousand-foot fall from a helicopter that closed the first Crank only to be resuscitated when doctors tried to harvest his organs. But wait, you ask- how would his bones still be intact from the impact? They wouldn’t, of course, and that’s all part of the fun, as the Neveldine/Taylor team embrace the inherent absurdities of the genre and add some of their own (a highlight of the first film: the subtitles Chev can actually read). So all you haters can back off. As a gamer might put it, Crank 2 will pwn u.
