Gorillaz go Bananaz

Posted by Sarah Clyne Sundberg

Those of you who spent your teens in the last years of previous century and perhaps read ID and Face magazine and nursed an interest in British popcultural ephemera while living mostly off lipgloss and cigarettes, may recall Gorillaz. Gorillaz was an animated band (as in they were drawings, not lively people) masterminded by Damon Albarn, of Blur, and Jamie Hewlett, creator of Tank Girl. Gorillaz were technically rolled out in 2000, but sorry, they feel pretty damn '90s to me. Long story short, there is now a Gorillaz documentary, Bananaz.

Think of Bananaz as sort of a reverse mocumentary if you will. Filmmaker Cari Levy follows Albarn and Hewlett around as they tour with and do promo for Gorillaz. The events are real, but the band is not, sort of.

Gorillaz may have started out as the sort of project highly successful musicians undertake when they're bored with their fame and the band that brought them there. Yet, the two Gorillaz albums sold 5 and 6 million copies respectively and the animated members of Gorillaz played sold out concerts at large venues across the world.

You can watch Bananaz in all it's glory on Babelgum.
