Screengrab Death Watch: Day One

Posted by Andrew Osborne

And now, the end is near, and so we face the final curtain...

Yes, it’s true...as it turns out, the shitty economy, global warming, the death of print media and the looming Swine Flu pandemic are only the tips of the iceberg of sadness we’ll all have to deal with this year.

We learned yesterday that hooksexup.com will be shuttering some of its culture blogs including...(sniff, sniff)...this one:  sad to say, the Screengrab is not long for this dirty old world.

So enjoy our beloved, non-commercially viable coverage of the cinematic universe while you can...and stay tuned for plenty of clip-show nostalgia, maudlin eulogizing, a heart-tugging farewell song from Bette Midler and, in a last-ditch attempt to boost hits, 100% more gratuitous Tits & Ass...like, uh...that chick from The Hills showing her butt!

Well, fuck me!  The blogs are the only reason I still come to Hooksexup.  So, Hooksexup editors, fuck you!

By the way, if you are trying to increase traffic, gratuitous shots of that idiot Heidi will not cut it.  Some Penelope Cruz might do the trick...

Damnation. I'd only started following Screengrab in the last few months. I can think of about fifty blogs that I only wish would be taken off life-support. This is not one of them.

Well, any and all homeless bloggers looking for shelter are welcome to sign on over at my dump (hell, *somebody* has to).

Best to all in any event.

Man, this is devastating news. Along with AV Club, the Screengrab was my favorite source of non-Variety film discussion.

Along with the earlier Scanner announcement, this is really tragic.

Best of luck guys. Please post where you end up, so we can follow the goodness!

Haha no dice, sorry. Hope you guys find a home soon, it's really hard to find film sites with consistently good articles. Especially gonna miss Unwatchable.

One of the few things on Hooksexup I try to catch on a regular basis.  This sucks...did they get tired of paying you guys in circus peanuts?

I know it's none of my business, but you guys should get Hooksexup to give you thescreengrab.com as severance and just host the blog elsewhere. You already have a good thing going and a built-in audience.

Wait, what?  This is awful.  Isn't there anything that can be done?  Why don't you have a fundraiser or something?  Try to get more readers somehow so you can attract more corporate sponsorship.  Add a couple of advertisement bars on the side of your screen.  You guys have long pages - have them going all up and down the sides of them.  Your readers won't care; we'd understand.  Isn't there anyway around this??

I live in fucking Iowa!  I go to school in Minnesota - but that's still not much better.  How am I supposed to get my movie related news?  I don't care about anything besides reading about movies and no one covers movies like you guys.  I read your site 3 times a day.  I feel like I'm having an arm cut off.  Again, I live in the mid-fucking-west -- you guys are completely cutting me off.  I don't want to have to start reading The Guardian - that sites boring as hell.  No other web sites have the character that Screengrab does.

If it is over, can you guys PLEASE suggest a site like yours to your reader -- one that has character, a humorously cynical tone, posts about 10 times a day, and likes the good and bad movies that you do?

We're bummed, too, believe me!  But stay tuned:  at some point in the next few weeks, I'm planning to post a general list of the blogs where you can find various soon-to-be-ex-Screengrabbers after June 1!
