So it seems the Callie-Erica romance is not long for this world...Turns out the GA viewership wasn't feeling them as much as we were. Creator Shonda Rhimes is adamant that Erica's trip out of the closet in last week's episode has nothing to do with Brooke Davis's sudden departure from the cast:
"Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it's not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show - Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie. I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with "another lesbian." If you'll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season." -- Us Weekly
The only thing that's weird about her statement for us is the part where she calls Sara Ramirez a "lesbian character." Correct us if we're wrong, but wasn't the point of last week's episode that Erica saw the leaves on the trees and realized she loves her women, but Callie was still a jack of all trades? Isn't the point that Callie may never see leaves? Sigh. You confuse us, Shonda Rhimes.
