She had a lot more to work with in the 70's. And we don't just mean that in a horny way...
We watched the season premiere of The L Word, and it was pretty good in its ridiculous manner, except for every line out of Pam Grier's mouth. Basically, the L Word writers just have her shake her head and say "girlfriend", "chile", and "babygirl", like some ludicrous decades-old white stereotype of black people..
Here's one line, from Grier's character, Kit, to Katherine Moennig's character Shane, about Shane making out with her best friend Jenny's girlfriend:
Mmm-hmmm. Yeah. You did it. It seem like her life been one big ass-whuppin'.
Who speaks like that? Are the writers secretly trying to make fun of the one hetero female character on the show? Why not just string together lyrics from 70's soul records, and piece together her dialogue from that:
Ooh, child. Things are gonna get easier. We'll turn this mutha out. It's just that I've been a little hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic recently.
That would be better, and make more sense. Poor Foxy Brown - she's a chick with drive, who don't take no jive:
