Girlcrush of the Week: Gabrielle Union Subbing For Sarah Shahi On "Life"!

Posted by Olivia Purnell

How did we miss this???

Gabby is on TV! She’s got a multi-episode arc on the NBC series Life. Honestly, this series flies a little below our radar because it’s on at the same time as Lost.  And you know how we feel about Lost (if you don’t know, here are three phrases to describe our affection for the mystical island: deep, oft tested, and lavender . . . do with that information what you will)

Life is actually a pretty decent show.  A cop, wrongly accused and convicted of murder, goes back to his job after being freed from jail.  Damien Lewis is quite good as Charlie Cruz. Sarah Shahi (formerly of the L Word) plays his partner and she is totally watchable.  Who are we kidding, she’s talented and ridiculously great looking (it shouldn’t be allowed, that’s how good she looks).  But Sarah got prego recently, so writers shipped her off to the FBI.  Obviously, in Sarah’s absence, the show was a little low on sassy lady hotness.

Enter, Gabby U.  We really like Gabby.  We watch Bring it On and 10 Things I Hate About You on a regular basis, wondering why Julia Styles and Kirsten Dundst were cast as the leads when clearly, Gabrielle is stealing the show.  She was awesome in those teen flicks; then again she played a teen until she was 32, so she had a little practice.  Remember when Gabbers was on 7th Heaven playing a highschooler at like, 28?  Oh, we do.

We don’t know if she’ll be doing any real heavy lifting (á la 7th Heaven) on Life as Cruz’s temporary partner.  But her inherent sass, and almost irrepressible smirk make us happy. So we’ll probably watch. Here she is being just adorable and funny and charming on Chelsea Lately.

Lindy Parker has worked as a ghostwriter, editor, dance instructor and a purveyor of dreams, one beer at a time. She loves Charles Dickens and Gabriel Garcia Marquez and also, straight-to-video releases with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. It's possible she reads more teen fiction than she should. She hails from Los Angeles, her hometown and soul mate, but she lives in Brooklyn, the fling she'll never forget.

Olivia Purnell left Ohio for sunny Los Angeles; then found that she couldn’t ignore New York City’s call, and brought herself to Brooklyn where she has worked with GenArt, BlackBook, the School of American Ballet, and finished an M.A. in Creative Writing from N.Y.U. She loves one-liners with sting and hates the stench of the subway in the summer. That said, she can’t get enough of either.

She wrote for alternative weekly papers in the first two states, and tried to learn Lakota in the last. (The vowels can be tricky.) She just earned her MFA in Creative Writing and has been published in Beeswax literary journal. She is unable to resist good writing or bad TV.
