  • Happy Hour: Ginger Beer Cocktails

I love beer so much that when I go out I usually never order cocktails. When the beer selection is poor, I'm like a deer in headlights and instinctually order a gin and tonic (or an old fashioned if it seems like a place that would actually know what it is). Well, sorry to say, but the following ginger beer cocktails will also be hard to find at a bar since most bars don't carry ginger beer. But, y'know what, when life (or liquor store) hands you rum/vodka, ginger beer, and limes, make Dark and Stormies and Moscow Mules!

The Dark and Stormy and the Moscow Mule have almost the exact same recipe:

  • Happy Hour: Maple Syrup Cocktails

When I saw this photo over at Apartment Therapy's The Kitchn, I immediately started salivating. Because of the maple syrup bottle in the background. Not the booze.

But if you're into the idea of a maple syrup cocktail, I've posted their recipe for a Maple Leaf Cocktail after the jump, along with a link to the maple syrup — and the maple candies — that always float my boat.

  • A Demy-God Among Kitchen Gadgets

    [$300, My Demy]

Aside from constantly injuring myself, I have two main problems in the kitchen: 1) if I don't use a recipe, I'll end up with something that tastes like rubberized oatmeal and end up eating toast for dinner, and 2) I am an incredibly messy chef. Come to think of it, I'm not even sure I should call myself a chef.

Enter the Demy... a device that truly achieves near godliness in the kitchen:

  • Happy Hour: Baileys Irish Martini

I went through a phase during which I was obsessed with chocolate martinis.

And the very best were, of course, made with Baileys Irish Cream.

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, Baileys has a delectable-looking Baileys Irish Martini recipe:

  • Happy Hour: My Ghetto Irish Coffee Recipe

    [$10 - $17, All Posters]

If you want to be classy, you can have your irish coffee as depicted in the poster above. If you want to get silly and enjoy something resembling irish coffee on the cheap, follow my recipe.

In my senior year of college my friends and I were getting ready for a big St. Paddy's day trip to the city. To prepare for the adventures, we had a few drinkies before leaving our house. I stuck with my ghetto irish coffee, which was perfected on one sad ass Valentine's Day a few years ago, and they made a bloody mary in a gallon container. Needless to say, I had an amazing drink that got me just drunk enough while they got very sick and threw up in a pitcher at a bar.

Here is my super easy, super tasty irish coffee recipe:

  • Quick Tip of the Day: Celebrate World Nutella Day!

If you buy nothing else today, at the very least, buy a few jars of Nutella.

I mean, I think every day should be Nutella Day, but today is the official World Nutella Day, and you can participate by by chronicling today's adventures with and enjoyment of Nutella.

Check this dinner spread I have planned:

  • Thanksgiving Tip: Potato Pie

My mother recently taught me how to make potato pie, a dish she serves every Thanksgiving. If you're looking for a last-minute side dish to bring to this years family fete, it's easy enough to whip up, and is tres delicious.

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture to share with you, so you'll just have to use your imagination. It's good. Trust me.

  • Happy Hour: Ghosts & Goblets

What can I say, I’m obsessed with spooky ghosts today. Or rather, the idea of ghosts, I guess, because technically, these glasses don’t contain ghosts, either. What they do contain is a floating “goblet” in the center, which makes it look like the liquid inside is floating in a goblet, rather than the simple glass you can see outside.

Also, they’re probably a bitch to clean by hand, so it’s lucky that they’re dishwasher safe. The Ghost Goblet comes in a set of four, with an included gift box.

Now, I would remiss, of course, if I didn't give you a drink to put in this goblet/glass. So naturally, here's a recipe for The Ghost:

  • Happy Hour: Shandy Time

You guys, it's so warm in NYC today, it's almost summer-like. This kind of weather makes me think of three things, two of which include: the beach, and lemon shandy. Have you ever had lemon shandy? If you like light beer, lemonade, and um, awesome drinks, you'll love a shandy. While some beer companies sell the stuff seasonally in summer months, it's really easy to make your own. Full recipe after the jump.

  • Happy Hour: Amazing Hors D'oeuvres

Yesterday I promised to share a recipe for my favorite hors d'oeuvres (spelled correctly, thank you very much) at a "progressive cocktail" party I attended last month. These stuffed dates are fucking phenomenal and I highly recommend them for any party, whether it's for a casual game night, or a fancy wine and cheese party (they're stuffed with goat cheese, so how perfect). Not only do they taste amazing (and I mean, amazing), they're pretty easy to make and they're low in fat. If the idea that they're dates turns you off, consider this: I thought I hated dates until I tried these. I don't know if it's that you can't taste the date so much or if I've just been won over by the decadence of this recipe, but either way, I stand corrected. After I tried them for the first time at my friend's party, I made them a few days later at my own party and they were a huge hit. In fact, if people had to choose between the dates and the booze, I'm almost certain they'd choose the dates, which, for my circle of friends is really saying something. Full recipe after the jump.

about the blogger

Alex Zalben is a writer living in New York City. He's written for McSweeney's, Modern Humorist and PulpSecret.com. As one-fifth of the sketch comedy group Elephant Larry, he has been written up in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and pretty much every other major publication. Their blog was named one of PC Magazine's Top Blogs for 2007, and they recently won an ECNY Award for their viral short, "Minesweeper: The Movie." Alex did not know love until he bought his first Mac.

Steph Auteri is a freelance writer and proofreader who has been published in Publishers Weekly, New York Press, Playgirl, and other bastions of fine writing. She maintains a professional site https://www.stephiswrite.com, and also blogs about freelancing over at Freelancedom. You can keep up on her day-to-day by visiting her Twitter page.

Diana Vilibert is a freelance writer, among other things. Born in Lithuania, she now lives in New Jersey, where she doesn't have to walk to work ten miles in the snow, barefoot, uphill both ways. Diana cannot afford most of the products she writes about because she buys too many pairs of heels to make up for her shoeless childhood. She's written for MarieClaire.com, Janemag.com, and CosmoGIRL!.

Shaun Seneviratne is a dude just like anyone else. Just your average guy that raps Bone Thugs-n-Harmony to strangers on the subway at 4 a.m., doesn't chew his food because he believes it's a waste of time, and sleeps next to a scale replica of the Ghostbusters headquarters. He can rest easy knowing Egon, Peter, Ray, and Winston have his back. He currently lives in northern New Jersey, plays bass in Rapid Cities, and recently started a tumblr.

Laureen Mahler is a writer and editor who lives in California, where the sun never sets and everyone rollerskates to work. She coedits Beeswax Magazine and spends the remainder of her time as a freelance writer and letterpresser. She truly believes that someday she will master the ultimate multitask of blogging while letterpressing, though that might mean that she'll need a second pair of arms.
