  • Ah! Real Magnets!

    Posted by Alex Zalben

I kind of hate fridge magnets. When I was in college, I loved the magnetic poetry set, because I thought it was totally cool, and made me seem smart. As I’ve gotten older, and seen many more fridges, I’ve realized it doesn’t make me seem smart; it makes me seem like everyone else.

Magnets also have a tendency to get knocked to the floor, disappear, and show up at inopportune times. You know, like when you’re on a date, and suddenly that embarrassing magnet you bought shows up just as you go in for a kiss. Right guys? Fellas? Hello?

Plus, magnets are usually pretty tacky.

Find out what's TOTALLY COOL, after the jump...

    [$150, Etsy]

I so admire those plucky Etsy artists, all of them far more creative than I (though I can crochet one mean chain). Their wares have provided me with much joy (and compliments) over the past few years.

I find the art offerings on Etsy so overwhelming, however, and am at a complete loss as to the most efficient way to search art pieces on the site. Which is why I'm so thankful to Modish for posting about these awesome pieces by toodlepipstudios. 3-D and illuminated, these intricate, thought-provoking designs are sure to provoke conversation at your next apartment soiree.

Whenever I want to hardcore lust after audio equipment I can’t really afford, I head over to Bang & Olufsen’s site to gawk at their space-ship worthy speakers. They also make equally mind-blowing telephones, TVs, and other equipment, so it’s not a shocker that they’ve created an absolutely stunning looking touchless remote control.

At some point, someone with way more scientific knowledge than I have will explain to me why we can suddenly stick magnets on our computers. I first noticed this when Apple released it’s Front Row remote, which magnetically stuck to your ’puter. I guess this magnetic USB hub is only the second occurrence, but still… Isn’t that supposed to erase it, or something?

Anyway, more vaguely unscientific info, after the jump.

So, you guys were so helpful in helping decide what to do with our big wall space over our couch (photos and artwork wins out, which will take forever to complete, but what the hell, life's a work in progress, right?), that I need to enlist your help again. This time I need to you step into my bedroom (photo above). See that pretty antique cherry wood dresser? I inherited that from my grandparents. The not-so-pretty clothes hamper? Inherited that from my boyfriend when I moved in. He swears it was always supposed to be "temporary" until he found something better. Well you know what? It's time to find something better! • Cheap Trick: Apple Coin Purse

    Posted by Wendy Atterberry

Every winter when I pull out my big coats and stick my hands in the pockets, it's like a little archaeological study in what my life was like a year earlier. An old movie stub, a matchbook from  a fancy restaurant, a Boston bus pass — they all remind me of events I'd totally forgotten. Now, as I pack up the winter coats for next year, I can't help but check the pockets one last time before stuffing them in a plastic tub under the bed. I think the findings say a lot about this winter:

No, this hasn't become an erotic photography blog. For that, you'll have to check out rose & olive, and the other Hooksexup photoblogs. Rather, I'd like to point out this awesome new piece of lingerie (I hope you'll forgive me, men, for focusing on the ladies this morning.) Said to be a better fit for women with C and D cups, I'm mostly interested in the fact that I can now up the slut factor in my summerwear by buying backless tops to go with this backless bra. A product of the ABC show American Inventor, this bra brings us that much closer to the bra-comfort ideal (I suppose that would be no bra). No more a.m. bra-strap angst! • Happy Hour: Inflatable Pub

This is so close to being the most awesome thing ever.

A UK company named Amber Iris have created the world’s first inflatable pub, which comes in four different varieties, the largest (the Hogshead) holding up to 50 people at a time.

The walls and ceiling are all bouncy castle material, and insides are held up with metal stanchions. And there in lies the one thing that’s holding this back from being the most awesome pub ever… Why isn’t the floor made of inflatable bouncy castle material?

Ummm… This is an idea so simple, so easy, it’s actually mildly shocking no one thought about it before. Instead of fumbling around, holding down wrapping paper with one hand, while trying to get the right size piece of tape with your other hand, you just roll, tear, and stick. That’s it.

Wendy Atterberry is a recent transplant to New York City via Chicago. You can often find her at some karaoke dive bar singing her repertoire, which includes "Midnight Train to Georgia," "Daniel," and most recently, "Sweet Dreams." Don't expect her to always hit the right notes. She lives in Manhattan with her boyfriend and two cats, and has a blog like everyone else.

As one-fifth of the sketch comedy group Elephant Larry, he has been written up in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and pretty much every other major publication.
