With any luck, the lovely Candis Cayne will return as Carmelita in tonight’s season premiere of
Dirty Sexy Money. Her ground-breaking turn as the transgendered mistress of Patrick Darling, played by William Baldwin, is part of a post
Will and Grace era in which gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered characters are seemingly all over the primetime network airwaves. The proliferation includes Kevin’s gay marriage on
Brothers and Sisters, Salvatore Romano’s closet story in
Mad Men, and Angela’s emerging bisexuality on
Bones. Although more Queer characters are appearing more frequently, and although these portrayals (Miss Carmelita notwithstanding) are increasingly nuanced, rarely do gay, lesbian, bisexual, or trans characters take the lead. In the days since Grace had her Will, it’s difficult to name a gay character or actor that carries a network series. GLAAD reports that there are as many as 83 Queer characters on television. But, The New York Times asks, is this enough? . . .
