So, today America got it's first bi-racial president. Who would have thought it?
I am pleased that he's president because he is clearly intelligent and, I suspect, he actually understands his own material. That's new.
I also like his stance on education and health care. Although it's astounding at the same time that some of the policies he's talking about haven't been in place for years already. What have you been smoking oh great American people?
But, most of all I like him because he just made my family the most fashionable thing out. We are this year's New Look. (This is the bit where dvalerley gets that I am being ironic and many of you peeps just get a bad attitude)
For those of you that haven't been following along, my kid's dad is black and I am, yep you've guessed it, white and so our kids are mixed race. Carmel is the cliched description, although they happen to be lighter than that given my extreme paleness.
My kid's dad and I split up 5 years ago, but we've always done things as a family because, although we're no longer a couple, a family we remain. His peeps are In Chicago, mine are in England, so it's especially important that the four of us maintain a family unit at least some of the time. The kids like it.
A few months back, when the race to the White House was hotting up, the four of us were at an exhibition at the Natural History Museum. Some old lady sauntered up to the ex with a beaming smile on her face and whispered something conspiratorially to him. He gave her a polite smile back, but I know him and it was not benign. I whispered "what did she say?" and he rolled his eyes at me. Once we got off the elevator, he told me she'd said "Your kids are beautiful and one day they could be running for president". Whoop de dooo! I wonder if she'd said that to each and every cute white kid she saw that day.
My family has had it's own share of drama because, as anyone living in a mixed race situation will tell you, you've now got two sets of people you can simultaneously (and completely inadvertently) piss off. Yep, we get it from all sides.
But, in New York at least, and since November 4th, we've just been beamed at any time we've been out and about. Ahhh, look at those cute little Obama children. Aren't they just adorable? Tonight, we're going out for dinner to celebrate in Fort Greene. We're probably going to beat our "how many times can we be beamed at?" record.
Yep, the four of us were cute from the get go, but today, we got a whole lot cuter. Expect to see more kids looking like mine coming to a magazine, TV and movie screen near you.
The Obama effect.
But hey, it's better to be smiled at than spat at. Maybe a change is gonna come.
Had to really...
